Judge Freely Frees Miller After Discouraging Trial

In Pendleton the court discharged defendant Sam Miller after upholding a motion for judgment of acquittal. Judge Fitzgerald Fitzgerald stated the evidence failed to prove a gambling game was played or value staked, despite a prior guilty plea on a related charge and the presence of a gambling setup in the rooms. The recorder expressed regret at the outcome but found no legal basis for conviction.

Cascade Sinks Lurline in Columbia River Collision

In the early hours near Rainier Oregon the steamer Lurline was rammed and sunk by the Cascade on the Columbia River. No lives were lost. The Cascade rescued about 30 passengers who escaped in their night clothes and were taken to Portland. Lurline went down in about three minutes in twenty feet of water.

Man Killed as Freight Car Strikes Conductor Near La Grande

Mr. Prosser, a 40 year old freight conductor for the Union, Lone Star, or related line, died instantly when a loaded coal car struck the empty car he stood on near Lime Siding, 26 miles east of La Grande. The accident occurred at 7 yesterday morning on freight train No. 31. Conductor Al Ray reported the event. the body was taken to La Grande and will be shipped to Nebraska for burial. Prosser had 14 years with the company and 10 years as a freight conductor between Umatilla and Huntington. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Order of Railway Conductors. He left a mother in Clearwater, Nebraska, and a brother in Ewings, Nebraska.

Lord Curzon to receive one third of estate in Chicago

Division of Lady Curzon's estate in Chicago on November 22 reports Lord Curzon will take one third of his wife’s estate. The wife left 1,760,000 dollars and the remainder goes to the children. The settlement includes a prior arrangement with Levi Z. Lester and notes Curzon will travel to Washington once the settlement is completed.

Sam Endicott pleaded guilty to gambling in polices court and paid a $75 fine by Judge Fite Gerald. A second gambling charge resulted in a not guilty verdict and a later trial. Peter Fox of Tonopah Nevada told police that two strangers asked him to name a custodian for 910,006 dollars. He paid 165 dollars in cash as security. The roll turned out to be an old newspaper wrapped in two one dollar bills.

At Hunt's Junction 127 carloads of Northern Pacific freight bound for the Sound were sidetracked by a Cascade tunnel cave-in. The blockade hampers grain firms paying demurrage, insurance, and interest as shipments to Seattle falter. Conductor Bertholet noted C R B N declined to relieve the overload.
