Washington reports Julian Bingham, collector of the Alabama internal revenue district, was removed and Joseph Thompson appointed to fill the vacancy. Delegates from Umatilla County will join in the Oregon Irrigation Association convention in Portland on November 18 and 19 with over 400 delegates and Oregon Bar Association meetings on the same dates. Railroads offer reduced six day excursion fares from Oregon points to Portland for irrigation week activities and hospitality including a ball, free theaters, visits to public libraries and historical society rooms, city hall and federal building tours, and a Willamette river steamboat ride. Governor Geer named W. J Furnish and Stephen A. Lowel to represent Umatilla County with additional appointments pending from Mayor Halley Pendleton Commercial Association Weston and the county court. Judge Hartmann and Commissioners Gilliland and Walker will attend as a body.
In Scranton Pennsylvania on November 10 a panic stricken non union engineer lost control of an engine at Heidelburg Colliery in Hittston. The engine house was wrecked and the top breaker torn off as nine union men were seriously injured and workers fled the mine. The non union engineer disappeared amidst escaping steam and wreckage.
Yorkton Manitoba November 1 In one of the Northwest's most famed incidents the Daukhobor fanatics were forcibly entrained and sent home by police. A military special of ten coaches arrived as authorities drove the Russians back to their villages. Fifty attempted to push east but were surrounded by farmers and officers while leaders were bodily carried to the train. The group refused to strike, living on wheat and raw materials and seeking freedom to seek the Messiah.
St Louis report says Peter Arlung assaulted Colonel Moses Wetmore after an alleged insult to his wife. A special message from Louisville claims the real Mrs Arland is there and denies knowledge of the other woman, complicating the case.
The Spanish cabinet headed by President Sagasta resigns after violent attacks in the chambers. King Alfonso is surprised and has asked for 24 hours notice. Liberals are confident he will not accept the resignation.
Reported here that Mrs. John Bradbury, wife of a millionaire mine owner, will sue for divorce while Bradbury is in Oakland. Four years ago Mrs Bradbury eloped with Warde, an Englishman, who later jumped from a train and was killed in Iowa.
An earthquake at Lisk iy South Russia today caused heavy loss of life with fifty persons known to be entombed. A large portion of the city lies in ruins.
Chicago reports a looming railway strike as managers refuse a 2 percent concession while conductors and switchmen meetings press for higher raises amid 40 percent living-cost growth. A formed Switchmen's Union of America draws inroads by three major lines.
