Federal officers arrested Jack Johnson after a grand jury indictment charging him with transporting Belle Schrieber from Pittsburg to Chicago on August 10, 1910 for an unlawful purpose. Johnson, found hiding in a south side hotel guarded by four men, faced a $39,000 bond though released after a court clerk acted and his mother signed the bond papers.
