Flood Displaces Calexico Residents in Imperial County

Reports say Colorado River flood drove Calexico families from homes. Refugees gathered on the levee as water three feet deep reached the railroad depot. A Santa Fe engine derailed near Needles and engineer Kiliitlea was burned to death. In Riga, sixty five drowned when an undown steamer sank in the Gulf.

King Alphonse and Ena wed in Madrid church ceremony

Thousands watched as King Alfonso XIII and Ena de Borbón married at the Sangeronille church with Cardinal Sanches officiating. Ena wore white duchess satin with lace and orange blossoms. Alfonso presented gold tokens. A bomb later struck the royal procession, killing two horses and a child. a boy was arrested.

In St. Petersburg on May 31 an official notice states Ro j estvensky and several fleet officers will be court martialed for surrendering the torpedo boat Bledvoy to Togo.

Flood receding as West End district recovers from flood

The Umatilla river crest has passed and water levels fall. G. E. LaDow home is ruined with about $5000 in losses, while many West Court Street houses suffer damage to foundations, floors, and furnishings. Mayor Fee orders a 6 PM to 30 PM flood district trespass deadline to protect property as trains and telegraph lines struggle to resume service.

Bail Refused Federation Men We Seek Early Trial

Hole May 21 Cauldwell court opened with prosecution motion for a continuance in the Mayor and Haywood murder cases citing undetermined habeas corpus in the U S supreme court. Judge Smith granted the motion, defendants excepted. Application renewed for Moyer Haywood Pettibone refused. Defense argues supreme court has October argument and a decision months away. Court would not adjourn the term if possible.

A mass democratic meeting in the city is postponed due to railroad damage and traffic suspensions. Governor Chamberlain may attend a rescheduled gathering at Music Hall Saturday night with local and out of town candidates present.

Five Were Drowned After River Collision

In Detroit on May 31 the steamers Cowle and Erin collided in the St Clair river nearly tearing Erin in two. The disaster left five dead, two women cooks and three men, with rescue efforts underway and investigations forthcoming.

Frisco quake reveals sprung steel frames and bureau split

A San Francisco earthquake exposed a badly sprung steel frame at the Mill a building and the ferry tower, raising fears of further damage to other steel structures. A split in the adjusting bureau of underwriters halted loss assignments, with some companies moving to settle losses separately. Mayor Schmitz praised U S troops for their relief efforts and forwarded thanks to President Roosevelt, noting courageous civic spirit and future San Francisco revival.
