Island City and Pendleton concede unlikely victory as contenders push for records. Supporters from various schools stay hopeful while Baker City and La Grande back favorites. preliminaries show tight closeness and the meet may hinge on final events.
In a small meet, Gordon and Pendleton led the 30 yard dash with Gordon first and Pendleton second, Fiser from Ontario took third. The 100 yard dash saw Gordon again win for Pendleton, Kimball-Pendleton second, Denham Baker third, time 10.1. Discus crowned Beers and Baker first, Heidenreich of La Grande second, Hunstock Baker third with 7 feet 11 inches. 120 yard hurdles rewarded Moody Ontario first, Roberts Cove second, Young La Grande third, time 17.5.
London May 26 The American Langford defeated Hague in the fourth round after a brief contest. Langford, lighter and shorter, relied on ring tactics and speed to overcome weight and reach disadvantages. A sharp right blow to Hague's chin ended the match early in the fourth round.
Arthur Crane aged 7 and Doe Crosby aged 9, both of Saginaw Michigan, arrived in Toledo after a journey spanning more than 5000 miles with no money. They left Saginaw last December, traveled to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Cincinnati, and then Toledo. They plan to return home.
Portland May 25 The jury found Charles A Strause guilty after nine hours of deliberation in a United States district court trial. He was charged with embezzling government funds by failing to turn over 4090 dollars to the treasurer or proper federal depositary. Authorities say he accounted for the shortage by claiming mistakes from a weak eye, and officials indicate an appeal is likely.
In a decision by Justice McBride the Oregon Supreme Court ruled Vale in Malheur County cannot be denied power to license tax and regulate liquor sales despite local option laws. The ruling in Harvey et al versus Malheur County follows the Medford case reasoning, though Medford Charter provisions differ from Vale's.
Senator Beveridge lauded Taft as a conservative exponent and urged downward tariff revision along protective lines, saying Taft originated the sentiment two years ago. At Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute May 25, a Taft letter announced his acceptance of a place on the Board of Hampton Trustees. The president expressed honor and a pledge to contribute to the school's continued success in educating African Americans.
New York report says HLH Rogers estate valued at nearly one hundred million dollars upon settlement. Bequest to Mark Twalty noted, but it is understood the entire estate goes to the Rogers family.
Washington May 25 President Taft and two friends paused to pick flowers on the capitol grounds a watchman rushed to arrest them. Taft concealed the bouquet and joked about Archibald and Butt taking the blame. The watchman recognized him and apologized profusely.
Portland Ore May 25 news that Albers Brothers Milling company, with mills in Portland Seattle and Tacoma, has purchased 555 feet of Greenwich docks numbers 1 and 2 in what is called the most important Portland waterfront transaction since the earlier All interests frontage purchase about a year ago.
L H McMahan will seek a court restraining the state treasurer from using 100000 for Crater Lake road and from paying 10000 to aid Malheur county bridge work over the Snake River into Idaho. He argues both acts are local and unconstitutional, not warranting statewide tax support.
Kennett Missouri May 25 a tragedy at Europa school house when Henry Culp kneeling in prayer was shot and killed by his brother in law Charles Champ 18. Champ fired three bullets and fled a posse headed by the sheriff hunts for him The victim had killed Harry Champ last August after being driven from home by the Champ brothers and was acquitted as the court ruled the act justified.
In Portland on May 25 the government land case against William Hanley rancher and Harney county development manager began in federal court. It alleges Hanley holds between eighty two and eighty three thousand acres of land owned by the company, totaling over 147000 acres in Harney county.
Baker City May 25 A 15 year old boy, Bert McMurren, is hospitalized with a bullet wound to the right cheek after an unloaded revolver under a pillow was discharged while two youths lay in bed. Eastman retrieved the weapon and, while joking, pulled the trigger. McMurren was dressed at St Elizabeth Hospital and doctors say the bullet exited upward from the left temple.
Hermiston Oregon May 26 E E Crawford brother of A C Crawford and leading Hermiston citizen died at his home after a brief tuberculosis illness. Born in Prince Edward Canada 36 years ago he moved to the United States in youth and graduated Bethany College. He married Fannie Gittens and was a Christian minister in Illinois and the Midwest. His last charge was in Albuquerque New Mexico. His remains were cremated in Portland.
In Eldon Indiana May 25 James Carter and three grandchildren were killed in a morning fire at their residence. Authorities suspect foul play by robbers.
Ten indictments returned by the Umatilla grand jury include three counts each for J A Crossley David Clark and Michael Burke in a Weston store burglary arson and larceny case. Mike Ryan faces murder inquiry and witness Jacob Schubert prepares to testify from Walla Walla while prosecutors weigh charges and trial timing.
Reno Nevada May 25 one hundred thousand golden pheasants are to be distributed through the state during the next three months the announcement was made by the state game and fish commission agreements to stock parks and public spaces with pheasants in a wildlife propagation effort.
George Jett of Baker City High School won the eastern Oregon oratorical contest with The Worship of Gold. Roy Rowland of Pendleton and Miss Agness Milne of Elgin ranked second and third, with Madeleine Hill of Union praised for best composition. Nine high schools were represented, and Judge Lowell awarded Jett the winner’s medal.
C A Barrett foreman of the grand jury has been in PonWeton since Sunday evening and will remain until the body completes its deliberations.
