May 24 Paria reports in prepeace circles that allied and German delegations will sign between June 10 and 11 or armistice breaks. Germans to hand over alien counter proposals by May 29. Allies may take four to five days to study before replying. Germans likely need a similar time to decide.

Miss E. Moussy Returns from Foreign Service

Miss Balantine Mowe formerly served as an interpreter in the telephone service overseas. She landed Thursday on the steamer Im erator and has not yet secured discharge, with return date uncertain. Her training as a telephone operator made her valuable, having served in Paris and Tool abroad.

Fighting Batteries Expected Here Soon

Oregon's fighting batteries A and B of the 14th Field Artillery will pass through Pendleton Sunday or Monday, word received by Lee Drake from Lee M. Clark, chaplain for Battery A, OLN. Further word will be received by the Hed Crom canteen for reception planning. Mr. Clark to meet the men at Huntington and plans a meeting in Pendleton to honor them if they come through at a reasonable hour.

Bandit Murderer Sentenced for Life in Washougal

Edwin Primroe, a confessed bandit and killer of Chief of Police Gibbons, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Adolph Lewis, his comrade, pleaded not guilty and will go to trial next week.

Fearful Kin Fears Cousin Died in Siberian Service

Mrs. Fred Book of this city fears her cousin John Hannan perished in the Siberian theater with American troops. Envelopes marked Deceased appear to hinder contact, and no letters confirm his status. Hannan, age 78, born in Nebraska, planned a Pendleton visit after four years in the regular army.

Steamer Virginia Burns Off Norfolk to Baltimore

Fire swept the steamer Virginia en route from Norfolk to Baltimore with about 24 people aboard. Passengers awakened leaped into the bay as lifeboats failed to man in time. The blaze spread rapidly, many injured and several missing. In Newport News three firemen died and some passengers believed lost after lifeboat mishap. 18 women dropped into the water when a rope broke, and a second boat with 36 women overturned. Rescues incomplete as survivors were checked.

Grading Contracts To Be Let Tuesday In Portland

State Highway Commission will let bids Tuesday in Portland for 17 miles of grading from the foot of Cabbarre Hill to Kamela, grading Arlington to Willow Creek, and paving Cancado Locks to Hood River. Bids for Rieth to Ech orate will be advertised then. Commissioner W. Thompson leaves Sunday for Portland to attend the meeting.

Knights of Columbus to Initiate 40 Here Tomorrow

Forty candidates will be initiated into the Knights of Columbus at the Pendleton K of C hall tomorrow. They will assemble at 9 am and attend St. Mary’s church in a body. The staging and ceremonies begin at 1 am with three degrees by La Grande Pendleton and Baker councils under District Deputy A. A. Snauth. Bishop McGrath will preside at the banquet at Eagle Woodman hall at 7:30 pm, his first Pendleton visit.
