May 24 Paria reports in prepeace circles that allied and German delegations will sign between June 10 and 11 or armistice breaks. Germans to hand over alien counter proposals by May 29. Allies may take four to five days to study before replying. Germans likely need a similar time to decide.
Miss Balantine Mowe formerly served as an interpreter in the telephone service overseas. She landed Thursday on the steamer Im erator and has not yet secured discharge, with return date uncertain. Her training as a telephone operator made her valuable, having served in Paris and Tool abroad.
Oregon's fighting batteries A and B of the 14th Field Artillery will pass through Pendleton Sunday or Monday, word received by Lee Drake from Lee M. Clark, chaplain for Battery A, OLN. Further word will be received by the Hed Crom canteen for reception planning. Mr. Clark to meet the men at Huntington and plans a meeting in Pendleton to honor them if they come through at a reasonable hour.
Edwin Primroe, a confessed bandit and killer of Chief of Police Gibbons, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Adolph Lewis, his comrade, pleaded not guilty and will go to trial next week.
The latest county honor roll honors local servicemen presumed dead in the war and outlines memorial services to be held tomorrow. Names include Nell W. Beet Milton Dell Hlanccott Pendleton L W Brand Pendleton and many others from Pendleton Athena Ukiah Milton and nearby towns.
El L Smith a long time Mendleton school board member will seek re election on June 14. Board members and supporters say school affairs are running monthly and efficiently and that the board should remain intact. Smith has served about 15 years and brings valued experience and support for recent improvements in the system and equipment.
Mrs. Fred Book of this city fears her cousin John Hannan perished in the Siberian theater with American troops. Envelopes marked Deceased appear to hinder contact, and no letters confirm his status. Hannan, age 78, born in Nebraska, planned a Pendleton visit after four years in the regular army.
A Rose Show prize event is announced for June 4 with $350 in prizes. Names listed include De BL A Garfield, Mr. c K. Cranston, and J. Vo Talleen. Exhibits must be entered by growers and displayed in the hall. Awards cover best plant, general collection, and perennials with cash and merchandise prizes.

The Third Army was strengthened by the formal transfer tests of the fourth and sixth divisions. The Sixth Division continues to entrain for Brest. The occupied region remains quiet and orderly.
Fire swept the steamer Virginia en route from Norfolk to Baltimore with about 24 people aboard. Passengers awakened leaped into the bay as lifeboats failed to man in time. The blaze spread rapidly, many injured and several missing. In Newport News three firemen died and some passengers believed lost after lifeboat mishap. 18 women dropped into the water when a rope broke, and a second boat with 36 women overturned. Rescues incomplete as survivors were checked.
State Highway Commission will let bids Tuesday in Portland for 17 miles of grading from the foot of Cabbarre Hill to Kamela, grading Arlington to Willow Creek, and paving Cancado Locks to Hood River. Bids for Rieth to Ech orate will be advertised then. Commissioner W. Thompson leaves Sunday for Portland to attend the meeting.
Paris dated May 24 reports Identenant Moert, a French aviator, began a preliminary flight from Morocon toward a proposed trans Atlantic attempt.
Lieu Robert Kaykendall, reportedly a deserter in Umatilla County, is set to present the honor flag. He returned from the American army of occupation and is associated with Eugene. After graduating from the University of Oregon he studied law at Columbia University in New York.
Forty candidates will be initiated into the Knights of Columbus at the Pendleton K of C hall tomorrow. They will assemble at 9 am and attend St. Mary’s church in a body. The staging and ceremonies begin at 1 am with three degrees by La Grande Pendleton and Baker councils under District Deputy A. A. Snauth. Bishop McGrath will preside at the banquet at Eagle Woodman hall at 7:30 pm, his first Pendleton visit. Frank McMonnimen of Heppner, Westmester, and speakers Fred Stelner and Roy Ritner will attend from local groups and services.
In probate court an order allows Lana Federer guardian to draw 20 pounds monthly for support of each of Jacob Federer’s seven children. Principal and interest total 1650 pounds, exhausted. Heirs Vincens leadore Joseph Rete Noker and Josephine reside with mother at Hebstein canton of St. Gall Switzerland.
County Commissioner Bob R. Anderson, of north Pendleton, has been in California six months for his health and expects to return home next month. Word was received by Crunky Judge C. H. Merah today. Anderson has been staying at a sanitarium at Ernest, Ona.
Frank J. Taylor reports hurried Soviet retreat from Petrograd as allied and Esthonian forces threaten the city. Evacuations, ammunition dumps blown, and rising famine mark a panic as Bolsheviks claim three million mobilized to oppose enemies. Thousands die daily from starvation as fronts shift.
Washington May 28 Representative Kahn head of the home military affairs committee proposes a standing army of 190000 with universal training and a phased homecoming of troops. He plans to press a law to Congress and says American soldiers should be withdrawn from Europe as their work there ends. He criticizes France and England editors and notes strained relations among soldiers abroad and home.
Washington May 14 The senate debate on the league of nations promises the bitterest partisan clash seen in the upper houses Democrats prepare a series of speeches to counter Republican attacks. Debate on the treaty will resume Monday as Congress continues consideration of the appropriation bill.
The city water bonds of 95 will be advertised for payment, 45 000 to be refinanced from a sinking fund created by the water commission. Bonds run 20 years with option to retire after 20, issued for the orbital water system in Pendieror. New water mains on Wille Street authorized, to replace outdated lines. Commission aims to replace worn pipes as needed and complete remaining work before the dry season, with progress toward additions by July 7.
