Strong participation boosts totals with pounds of wool sold well above last year. Buyers and growers report high prices and eager demand led by leading U S merchants, with the next sale slated for June 10 and forecasts of continued strong activity.
Henry Seales lists 49 bags totaling 17 238 pounds at 13 percent with Brown and Adams. Brown and Adams and Livingston handle 150 000 pounds Hed at 144. Whitman Farnes worth and Thayer hold 82 000 pounds at 13 percent.
Washington May 24 The International Association of Machinists reports Santa Fe strike situation unchanged as roads import men from Philadelphia and other Eastern cities. Most of the newcomers are said to know little about the trade.
Government officers and Seattle police seized 2000 pounds of contraband opium this morning in a major haul. Three arrests were reported, one man confessed where the drugs were hidden. Opium valued at eleven dollars per pound.
The Insular legislature adjourned today at San Juan but immediately reconvened for the first extraordinary session to negotiate a loan of $5,000,000 from the United States. The session aims to secure funds to address financial needs of Porto Rico.
Six of thirteen graduating orations were delivered before a large crowd in Assembly hall. Chloe Stanfield won the contest and will represent Pendleton High at the Eastern Oregon contest in La Grande on May 28 with her oration One Man Fable. Bertha Alexander gave a graduating oration but did not enter the contest. A musical program accompanied the graduation ceremonies and judges were Rev W H Blenkney Rev W L Van Nuys and Bert Huffman. Tonight’s program begins at eight o clock.
Seattle May 24 The only found ation for the report that the Corwin from Seattle to Cape Nome has wrecked off Vancouver Island after entering Ketahbikan to readjust cargo for a top heavy vessel. Left Ketahkan May 21 in good condition. Baker City May 24 The Baker City Herald again in legal tangle as creditors seize the old Herald office. management by L Buel Livermore proposed. Dominion Liner Vancouver is ashore on Matane Hawk with no danger anticipated.
New York May 24 The interstate commerce Commission opened hearings on Hearst's complaint against the Reading and other railroads as to rebates to favored lines. Contracts with Temple, Jersey Central, Lackawanna, Erie, Susquehanna and Reading show rebates from 2 to 4 percent of tonnage. Some lines like Delaware and Hudson and Ontario and Western were not in the Temple agreement. Authorities withheld certain contract details pending subpoenas.
Reports from multiple fronts describe Japanese setbacks with 16,000 casualties and 2,000 Russians. Three Japanese cruisers reportedly captured near Vladivostok. Cholera outbreaks cited among Japanese in Feng Huang Chong. Russian forces under General Fokeurrr claimed to have massacred seven Japanese battalions near Kinching as Japanese retreated toward Feng Huang Cheng.
Friction between France and Rome leads to the recall of the French ambassador. Papal secretary Cartina Merri Det vo speaks of a holy way to resolve the French situation, while Paris announces ministerial shifts and the recall of the envoy.

Day, chancellor of Syracuse University, resigned from the bishopric he had been elected to the previous Saturday after a sensational incident involving a San Bernardino professor. Four missionary bishops were elected, including Merriam C. Harris to Japan on the first ballot. Balloting for editors of church publications was in progress as the conference adjourned.
A Boise river plant of Highland Power Company near Boise was destroyed in a blaze yesterday afternoon causing estimated losses around 150000 dollars. The facility powered placer mining pumps and was planned for conversion to electricity once ore worked out. The company’s home office is in New Hampshire. The Macedonian reader note hints at current events in Macedonia and Roosevelt’s activity in Massachusetts. Burton, Massachusetts, May 24: President Roosevelt arrived this morning for a campus commencement where his son studies.
