Mrs. Mary A. Livermore, famous author and lecturer, died this morning at her home in Melrose after a period of illness from bronchitis.
May 23. August M Machen former superintendent of the free delivery bureau of the post office department pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the government over letter car per supplies. He received two years at Moundsville Penitentiary to be served after his current sentence. Crawford pleaded not guilty. Other indictments against Machen are expected to be quashed.
Quotations from the Gark Grain Commission Co show a sharp drop in Chicago grain markets. Wheat slipped from yesterday’s close of 1.00 to about 0.91 today, corn at 0.49 and oats at 0.332 amid a surprising price slump despite northwest crop reports and uncompleted corner attempts.

May 23 report of a cutting affray at A L Nelson’s saloon about 11 30 pm. Edward Francisco, intoxicated and sought by Nightwatchman Mahéar, returned to the saloon and after being warned, attacked Nelson at the back door with a large pocket knife, wounding his left arm. Francisco had prior trouble recently.

Portland May 23 The jury in the case of Councilman Rumelin charged with attempted bribery reported it could not agree and was discharged. Damaging evidence was given by former City Engineer Elliott who alleged Rumelin offered to divide $6000 in bribe money with Elliott.
