A wire to the commissioner from United Business Interest asks for MWPFATRIDGE to be reinstated as agent. The commissioner, based in Phoenix, is approached to influence the transfer of all employees of the Indian School by order of the acting commissioner. The letter is quoted.
Commissioner Leup wired James Gwinn secretary of the Commercial negotiation this afternoon saying it would be entirely impossible for him to visit Pendleton this season It is therefore probable that the original plans of the business men of sending a man to Leap or to Washington will be adhered to It was reported this afternoon that Mr Gwinn would be the man sent back

In Los Angeles on May 13 a settlement awards Mrs BE Baldwin a million dollars from the will of “Hicky” Baldwin. The widow received a mortgaged San Francisco land parcel worth about thirty thousand dollars, with lawyers who arranged the compromise to share four hundred thousand dollars among five.

Salem May 13 The railroad commission is examining the reasonableness of interstate wool rates and whether the Southern Pacific Corvalliy and Eastern and O R N have provided adequate stock shipping facilities including double decked chutes. Actions were started against the Corvallis and Eastern for failing to erect a depot at Lyons with penalties from 100 to 1000 dollars.
Washington May 14 Declaring the free list would ruin iron and steel in America Senator Hurley of Michigan urged Aldrich’s 26 cent per ton tariff. He warned free ore would cost miners revenue over 3000000 dollars annually and pressed the miners’ case. Rayner of Maryland followed with a free ore plea.
Jack Huston and Rev. W T Buster named in Wallowa County grand jury indictments for setting fires during a hunting trip after the prohibition campaign. Huston, publisher of the Monday Magnet, and Buster deny any act and claim mistaken identity. Sheriff trouble anticipated as authorities pursue both men with bonds arranged through the district attorney.
Washington May 13 Former representative Hepburn of Town told President Taft that the government had been robbed by fraudulent weighing of sugar for the past twenty years to his knowledge. He said eighteen years ago he chaired a committee to investigate the customs bureau and found flagrant bribery and corruption.
Footsore but determined J. E. Goodpasture travels from Medford Oregon to San Francisco to learn the fate of nephew Idoyd W. Fatcher who vanished November 24 last year. He believes Fatcher’s mind was unbalanced and notes he left a wife and three daughters. Fatcher was an agent for a nursery company based in Salem.
May 18 report from Maripona notes workers digging on McCoy's murder ranch found a plain gold ring engraved with WW on the inside near the site where the skeleton of Ramuel Wilton, who vanished after a quarrel with Nancher McCoy, was unearthed. Authorities now believe this bone may explain Wilson’s death from thirty years ago amid four skeletons found in a well near the home.
Bakersfield California May 13 hundreds of Kern river farmers exhausted their efforts to ward off floods. The rising water inundated ten thousand acres of wheat and barley as relief attempts faded. Some still resist the break, but the river surges hourly under pressure.
North Yakima Wash May 13 A special train bearing Portland business men arrived at 1?20 this afternoon. They will be met by city officials and driven around the town to view irrigation systems. An informal smoker will be held at the Commercial club rooms to conclude the visit.
A serious outbreak worsened as socialist radicals clashed with nationalists in the chamber of deputies. Troops intervened to restore order and expulsions followed. Also two hundred postmen joined the striker action this afternoon.
In Pendleton the undefeated Pendleton and Newberg high school teams meet for a state bid, debating ship subsidy with Pendleton defending the negative. Leaders Harold Warner Roy Rowland Frank Engdahl and W T Motschenbacher Kathryn Bryan Dale Trew travel with officials to Pendleton for a one hour event at the First Methodist church with music from the high school band and chorus.
Stirling Arnold, a farmer near Reno, reached age 103 and quit heavy work. His 80-year-old son took over the field as Arnold’s wife nears 160, ending decades of labor. Arnold, born in North Carolina, has smoked tobacco all his life but not in excess.
Washington May 13 The house committee of the whole met this afternoon to discuss the Philippine tariff bill introduced by Payne of New York. The measure aims to shape tariff policy affecting Philippine trade and revenue during a period of transition and legislative debate.
Baker City May 13 The Thomas pathfinder automobile left the city at 9 o'clock this morning aiming to reach Walla Walla tonight. Notorious Dance Hall Burned Tonopah Navy May 18 The most notorious dance hall in the west was destroyed by fire last night with a loss around twenty five thousand dollars. The big coalho was also used as training quarters for fighters.
The Vogue millinery store will run a ribbon sale Friday and Saturday to raise funds for the church building. Five percent of all receipts will be donated to the church. Special prices apply to all items with ribbons discounted to 45 cent, 34 cent, and 35 cent ribbons at 20 cents.
