Large delegations from four counties attend the convention with committees named to handle various concerns. Col. Hickox discusses dipping and federal quarantine rules. A restriction excludes Tate Comers who did not purchase land with livestock and other chattels.
Several hundred sheepmen and cattlemen from eastern Oregon counties assembled in the circuit court room for the Blue Mountain reserve meeting. D B Sheller, superintendent, explained dipping and federal quarantine as Col. Hickox of the Bureau of Animal Industry spoke. The proceedings outlined the reserve boundaries and set plans for today with committees named from Umatilla, Morrow, Gilliam and Wheeler counties.
Pennsylvania railroad officials report nine killed and many injured in a collision last night between the St Louis express and Chicago mail on a single-track line near Altoona. The trains were racing to pass a prior freight wreck when they collided at high speed.
The meeting sets June 1 to October 1 as stock admission period with fees of 20 cents per head for under 70 and 36 cents for 70 or more. Mitchell spoke against strike action but the committee recommendation to reembrace the 1903 terms was carried. The decision does not directly affect troubles in West Virginia Ohio Indians Kansas or other regions.
Dr Hai Hung Chaun, representative of the Chinese government, visits Chicago to select women graduates for teaching in the new co educational college at Pekin. He has picked two from Wellesley and plans 20 or 30 more from the West. He envisions recruiting all remaining Western graduates.

California land claim bill of 1 million dollars favored, and militiaman Stelman seeks state attorney general representation.
D Brownell, pioneer irrigator, reports thriving alfalfa crops in Umatilla as arid land reform takes hold. He notes sandy soil now supports robust growth, with roots stabilizing the ground and irrigation easing as the season progresses. The town shows revival with more homesteaders visiting daily.
Pendleton Aerie of the Eagles will hold memorial services for departed brethren at o o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Eagles hall. The Eagles' band will perform and chaplain Lee Dd Drake will deliver a memorial address. Organizing committee includes City Recorder Thomas Fits Gerald, Lee D Drake, A W Hanson, A Fuhrman, S W Stowell, Wm Sturgis. Ten deceased Eagles—W. EL Craw, J. T. Williams, George B. Griffin, John W. Dorras, Frank P. Light, James N. Roberts, Fred Langiver, Joseph Hoch, Samuel Trout, August Stangier—are engraved on tablets. families and friends are invited.
District boundary board comprising the county court and county superintendent met today to act on petitions since the last session. Several minor changes were proposed, but only one case showed contention. Residents of district 11 Nye filed the notable protest regarding the line between Nye district 11 and district 62.
This morning a second remonstrance signed by many district 11 residents reached the county superintendent. Many signers also joined the initial petition, indicating a shift in sentiment among the signees.
Sheriff Taylor returned the pistol used by outlaw Frank Smith to Sharon & Holdings from whom it was stolen on April 14. Sheriff Culver of Marion county had given the weapon to Smith’s killer, with Smith killed earlier. The gun is a large 41 Colt revolver with a side hammer. In Salem yesterday Diamond and Crull, horse thieves, were placed in the penitentiary. New Insurance Order leaders R Dwight and J C Milne are in town to introduce the Order of Home Guardians with Frank Exmay named district manager for the district, headquartered in this city. Exmay will reside permanently here.
A riot by about 300 Italian laborers broke out as contractors used non union workers amid a strike. Police were overwhelmed in a charge, eight rioters and five officers injured. Citizens aided police and drove the mob back until reinforcements arrived. one striker and one policeman were believed mortally wounded.
Chicago wheat closed at 1, corn at 47, and oats at 2u. Viola Gallagher, 16, married and pretty, was ordered committed to the reform school at Chehalis by Judge Brents in the afternoon. This marked the second time a married woman from Walla Walla was sent to the house of correction.

Funds came from New York Chicago St Louis and Kansas City banks shifting to California demands for cash raise bank reserves and steady rates. Governor Chamberlain appointed G. A. Hartman to succeed Judge Bean as county judge, with Bean's resignation effective June 2. Hartman will serve a one month overlap before the new term begins July 1. Bean argues the county judge elect may qualify immediately after election.

In Washington on a May day in the Senate, Penrose and Tillman fought verbally behind closed doors. Tillman attacked Penrose and threatened to expose alleged uncreditable matters while Penrose said he had affidavits from southern people to file. He said he feared nothing Tillman could say but suspected the affidavits would be published. The scene ended with the expectation of a possible physical encounter.
