A United Press dispatch from San Francisco reports a bitter campaign in California with strong Hoover Johnson mobilization in Northern California and a push to defeat the Hearst Johnson faction in the south. Weather forecasts predict heavy turnout as delegates to the Republican convention and unpledged Democrats are chosen amid favorable casting conditions.
The Pondieten Port American Legion post announces a boxing smoker on Saturday, July 3, following a successful April 10 event. James R. Bowler, Rhine veteran, elected post commander, with Dr Fred A. Lionallen as vice commander and other officers named. Memorial day plans assigned to the memorial committee.
El Centro May 4 Nina Lee Deloney's body found by a large crowd as Harvey Bluebeard who confessed to murder is taken to the desert site. The search party and Sheriff Applington witnessed the discovery with the body in the described position. Harvey collapsed and was moved to an ambulance. Separate reports say two more wives are involved and that marriages were once under other names in Tacoma and Idaho.
In Des Moines on May 4 the Methodist church unanimously adopted a resolution opposing Irish freedom and urging Congress to defeat bills recognizing the Irish Republic. The general conference also discussed the League of Nations and referred the Episcopal address on the league to a church committee for consideration.

There are no candidates for the democratic nomination and Indiana law forbids the writing in of a candidate. In convention May 4 delegates from several states attend the dwrrier convention of the metal mine Worker industrial union number 406 Industrial Workers of the World Piet de being held here.

J T Light, an express messenger, was grievously injured when the helper engine and passenger train No 20 collided near Huron. Initial reports claimed death but he may recover. The crash is blamed on neglected orders as the helper engineer J D Hamilton says he did not receive his orders and entered the block without warning. Fireman Leonard Bickford of La Grande could not escape and perished amid the blast. the incident continues on page 1.

About 5 o clock this morning a Turner and Caldwell Garage fire started by an engine explosion engulfed the west section of the building in Pilot Rock. Three frame stores on Main street burned, two occupied by the garage, one vacant. Losses include five cars and over 500 gallons of gasoline, with Swearingen Brothers of Pendleton as owners. The Joe’s property and local telephone office also suffered damage, with insurance reportedly light.

Maryland voters favored Wood in the presidential preference primary nearly two to one over Johnson. Wood captured about 15,900 votes to Johnson's 5,059, with returns indicating light turnout and Wood's near-total control of the state convention. General Leonard Wood defeated Senator Hiram Johnson in a high-margin vote, securing a decisive lead in Maryland.
Associated Press reports the Pesgs cyclone wrecked the town Sunday night. The death toll reached seven with additional reports indicating about 20 wounded may not survive. The scene is Muskogee Oklahoma and authorities discuss the disaster's toll.
