R C C Howe, Armour & Co. general manager for Omaha, testified before Chicago's special grand jury probing the beef trust. A high government official pledged no whitewashing and said indictments for criminal violations of federal statutes are expected as the jury takes up the inquiry.
In New York on March 23 the federal grand jury resumed the beef trust investigation. A Ed wards a leading Swift Co official and several other packing house representatives are being examined.
Hopkinsville Ky March 23 The Standard Oil has accepted judgment and a fine of 100 on one of a batch of 651 indictments for selling oil without a license. The company contends the payment of one to Killen the rest of the indictments.
Chicago trading for May wheat opened at 1.19 and closed at 1.12. Corn traded around 45 and oats near 30. Prices reflect early market activity across grain futures and local handling of Umatilla produce.

A Great wear-bound train derailed near Leonia Idaho at 4 oclock causing the death of engineer J Jones of Spokane. Fireman baggage and mail clerk were injured as the engine baggage and mail cars toppled down a 10 foot embankment. No passengers were hurt. In Lincoln Nebraska a Burlingon pincer train derailed at Woodlawn six miles west of here. Three coaches rolled. several people seriously injured. Union Pacific sent a special train to transport the wounded to Lincoln.
Five men were drowned when a ferry boat capsized at lock number four near Charleroy on the Monongahela River at seven this morning. The ferryman Hugghins was saved and the other victims remain unnamed.

Judge W R Shannon son of George Shannon will be guest at the Western World's Fair in Portland on June 1. He is the only living direct descendant found of a Lewis and Clark companion. Evelyn K Clark, socialite from Hutchinson Kansas, will also attend as a descendant of George Rogers Clark and Meriwether Lewis.
