About 3,000 votes reported from about two thirds of precincts show Taft leading in an early count though the president is not a candidate this year. Voters have a voice as returns come in slowly from scattered districts.
In Fargo North Dakota on March 20 returns from 1167 precincts show La Follette with at least a 15,000 plurality. The totals give La Follette 34,1659 to Roosevelt 22,877, with Taft estimated at about 3,000.
Fargo reports show La Follette leading Taft and Roosevelt by about 10 000 votes statewide with 669 of 1800 precincts counted. Roosevelt backers concede a 6000 advantage though local papers split on the outcome as districts continue to report results. Governor Johnson notes a significant Merit vote reflecting progressive momentum.
Senator La Follette claimed the real progressives will hold the balance of power in the Chicago convention before departing for Washington. He spoke March 20 in sees progressives power.
The record notes list enormous specimens with males reaching eight inches and females eleven inches across the wings in British Guinea.
Cleveland reports all indications point to a nationwide coal strike. Thirty two operators conferred with the same number of miners' representatives, but no compromise emerged. Operators adopt a no compromise stance while miners remain determined to hold firm.
Round-Up Park plans to expand further by acquiring Clapton lots at Court and Star streets, forming an annex with the Boyd lot already owned by the city. Tonight the Round-Up directors will request city council approval to purchase the lot as part of the earlier comprehensive expansion plan.
Judge W R Ellis announced he will join rivals for congressional talks across the district in the campaign’s final weeks. If joint meetings fail, he will speak in veteran gatherings in April. Ellis headquarters open in Pendleton with Ned Haldwin as publicity secretary after a large Klamath Falls meeting.
A gas explosion in the Sanders Coal mine near McCurtain Oklahoma traps about 25 workers. Rescue teams struggle as fire and gas prevent entry. One badly mutilated body has been recovered near the mine entrance, and a later report indicates all entombed men perished. Government mine rescue squads rush to scene to take charge.
John P. Rusk of La Grande will speak at a public meeting at the city hall Saturday evening starting at 8 o clock. The event is arranged by local Roosevelt boosters who report strong encouragement for his campaign for the Republican nomination for congress from eastern Oregon.
In Seattle on March 20, A A Anderson, 40, entered the office of Dr W T Akey and Dr D Samuel Fuskimb, opened fire, fatally wounding both doctors. He then fled, shot himself nearby, and died after being taken to hospital. Anderson had been a patient of the doctors.
New York reports Mrs Blatche Carson of San Francisco wife of Edwin Carson a prominent club woman and social figure smeared with diamonds and pears and smuggled goods, died by hanging herself from a window on the eighth floor of Hotel Brossard. The widow had traveled the world since last August and was noted for wealth and social prominence in the West.
Democrats from Jefferson and Jackson follow ers converge on the city for a major gathering and banquet this evening. Walter M. Pierce of Hot Lake and Co. BP and Coshow of Roseburg, both seeking the Democratic nomination for United States senator, are in attendance. Pierce plans to open his campaign with a lengthy speech, while the southern Oregon candidate has stayed with the Bishop family as an uncle to the Bishop brothers.
Pendleton welcomes 248 visitors from Idaho and eastern Washington arriving by special train at 4 30 for a one hour stay en route to Walla Walla after Portland Livestock Show. The group includes bankers merchants ranchers journalists and professionals with University of Idaho and Washington State College instructors among them. The event aims to strengthen northwest business ties as the party tours Pendleton Woolen Mills and the business district before reboarding.
John Morrison and William Cooper were arrested by Sheriff Click on warrants accusing them of assault and battery tied to the March 14 local option election. Complainants include Frank E. Parkin, a Socialist and dry advocate, and J. A. Ferris, a farmer and itinerant preacher. Rumors link other alleged attackers to Officer Tabor and Election Clerk Ed Heck.
Grangeville, Mar. 20. Dr. F. A. Campbell, a renowned Grangeville physician, died in Moravia Cal after months of illness from blood poisoning in the hand. He sought health at a sanitarium near Los Angeles. His wife Mia Campbell and daughter were by his side. Burial will be in Moscow, former home of Mrs. Campbell.
Deputy Sheriff Rice brought the missing election register from Peck. The board of commissioners halted discussions on the local option ballot Monday and will resume Thursday with Commissioner Green. It is hoped sufficient evidence will be found to support contesting last week’s election by the high license forces.
Clarkston Washington March 20 Dr Foster a noted Juliaetta physician announced plans to spend about $25,000 to erect a sanitatorium in Clarkston. Construction to start in the near future and work to begin promptly.
Lewiston reports Dave Greve departed for Sacramento California to join the Portland baseball team for early spring practice. Gregg signed with Portland early this season and is likely to be retained all year. Critics expect a strong season as he is in prime condition and ready for a tough training period.
The Nez Perce church convention closes in Stites March 20 with over two hundred attending and many conversions reported. The yearly gathering rotates locations among the community and marks its annual outreach.
Juilatta March 20 Mr. Nanny Debolt pioneer resident died yesterday after a lingering illness. The remains have been sent to Moscow for interment.
Lewiston Idaho March 20. City council has received a floor plan for a proposed addition to the Carnegie Library building by Architect Loring. After reviewing, the council will meet with the library commission once Mayor Perkins returns from the Portland excursion. The library commission ladies urged Carnegie to enlarge the building, and a favorable reply was received asking for current and proposed floor plans.
Lewiston Iigho March 20 Officials report that election registers used in the focal option election last week are missing from Tammany Bedrock and Culdesac precincts. This could push back the canvass of votes by the county commissioners and delay official results. In Culdesac several legal ballots are said to have been cast and the arrival of the book is eagerly awaited.
Fred A. Dole of Dole & Co. departs for Spokane to arrange bringing a rock crusher to Lewiston Idaho for the Hassam paving on Highth street. The foundation rock will be taken from south of the University addition along the Snake River. Work will start soon and be rushed to finish before heavy summer travel.
Portland banker Sylvester Peterson died in Los Angeles today after arriving to discuss affairs related to his Portland firm. Peterson, a prominent figure in local finance, was reported in the brief notice to have passed away unexpectedly during his visit.
