President Roosevelt's final White House day, March 3, 1909, featured a crowded schedule of autographs, bill signings, and numerous meetings. He greeted visitors from schoolboys to governors, signed naval appropriation bills, dictated letters, and presided over a dinner with the Roosevelt and Taft families.
Lewleton Idaho March 3 An elaborate program will accompany the arrival of the first Open River association steamer at his city from Ce lilo March 16 All commercial organizations in northern Idaho will be present to organize the North Idaho League of Commercial clubs.
Nevada City March 3 reports a severe earthquake in Nevada county lasting about ten seconds. The tremor excited residents as it rattled streets and drew curious crowds for early assessments of damage and aftershocks.
David Eller of Comox Vancouver Island committed death by his own action Sunday in Stanley Park Vancouver. He crawled to a secluded spot and drank laudanum before slitting his throat with a razor. The body was found in the afternoon. He had been worrying over financial affairs.
Belluno Italy March 3 Thirteen residents were crushed to death as a landslide buried scores of houses in Tassel village. Local officials report extensive damage and ongoing search efforts for missing residents.
Washington March 4 The first squadron of the Pacific fleet has been ordered to proceed to Seattle for the opening of the exposition. Senator Piles was notified to this effect by the secretary of the navy. The squadron will be composed of eight armored cruisers and will remain there eight days. They will return later.
Cordova Alaska March 3 active railroad construction started today and will proceed with speed throughout the summer. The steamer North western arrived yesterday bearing contractors and a large crew. The city was decorated in celebration of the event.
Four miners were killed at the Diamond mine of the Amalgamated company in Butte Montana as crews fired a blast. The fuse tangled while eighteen holes were being sighted and two exploded prematurely. Ivan Hayne sacrificed himself signaling to lift as more explosions followed. One miner, Ikma, was severely mangled and not expected to live.

A new crier formed on Mount Colima as rocks and lava erupted, accompanied by several tremors. Dispatches from Presidencia reported the eruption today, noting the volcanic activity near the city of Mexico.

New Orleans March 3. Eight convicted men, all Negroes, are scheduled for execution Friday in Louisiana. Charles Davis will hang at Port Allen for killing a guard. Wallace and Ben Jones for killing a railroad conductor. Charles Madison for criminal assault at Calcasieu Parish. Jim Collier and Andrew Washington for murder. Willie Williams for murder in Jefferson Parish. Jack Ratier for murder in St Marys Parish.
In Los Angeles a will filed for probate reveals that the bulk of a 25 million dollar estate of "Lackey" Baldwin goes to his two daughters, Mrs. Clara Stocker of Berkeley and Mrs. Anita McClaughry. A San Francisco resident is named as Zelda, a supposed third daughter. Zelda receives two hundred acres in a La Puente ranch valued at about 200 thousand dollars. The widow is left one third interest in the Baldwin Annex property in San Francisco valued at 100 thousand, with the property mortgaged for 146 thousand. The will also allocates smaller Rancho La Puente portions to five nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

The ball struck her leg near the ankle, fracturing a bone and causing painful injury as the family was preparing to travel 45 miles to Canyon City.
Advices from Salmon Idaho report the killing of William Verges an old-time miner and prospector at Indianola last Friday. A quarrel with postmaster Charles Layton led to the shooting. only Layton’s 10 year old child witnessed it. Layton and the boy are jailed. One report says Verges was beating Layton when Layton’s son fired.
In Eugene Oregon Monday morning two suspects entered EB Hanson’s clothing store through a skylight, stealing goods valued over fifty dollars. They changed clothes inside, took jewelry, handkerchiefs, ties, valises and other items, then exited via the front door.
Salem Oregon March 3 Indications are strong Governor Benson will issue a call for a special session of the legislature tomorrow. It is expected to convene Friday and Saturday March 12 and 13 to consider urgent state matters.
In Buffalo on March 3 the Lackawanna Steel Works reduced every employee’s wages by 10 percent. The plant is among the largest independents, and this marks the first wage cut from independent firms since the war against United States Steel began.

W H Tilford vice president of Standard Of company died at his New York home yesterday. The business leader was a key figure at the company and is mourned by colleagues and associates.

H W Stewart alias Frown Wilson and others, jailed in Jackson county for theft, were brought to Eugene to stand trial for a forgery alleged in Eugene months ago. The case involves endorsing a check with the name Lee Hoselton and cashing it at a local bank. He is said to be wanted in Roseburg for running away with a livery team.
One hundred passengers aboard train No 1 arrive in Pendleton at 12 40 using early colonist rates granted by Harriman lines. Conductor Fred Waffle reports 67 to Portland 25 to Spokane 3 to Pendleton 3 to Umatilla 2 to Heppner 2 to Walla Walla 1 to lone 4 to Hood River and 3 to Lewiston. Rates run through March and April for westward settlers arriving via through eastern trains.
