Baltimore results from June 28 report no change on the fourth ballot as Clark maintains a lead with 440 votes assorted by the field. Wilson gains on the second ballot and Enthusiasm runs high for each announced result as the session lengthens.
William Jennings Bryan chaired a Baltimore Democratic convention where a two thirds vote backed a resolution opposing any presidential candidate tied to J Pierpont Morgan Thomas F Ryan or August Belmont or any “privilege seeking” group. Bryan called for delegates aligned with the money trust to withdraw and urged the party remain loyal to popular government and equality before the law. The speech denounced efforts to sell the party to predatory interests and described Morgan Ryan and Belmont as controlling the money trust.
Ted Angell from Ivee John Day country with Reeves brought 300 horses to sell. While watching Elk charioteers at Round-up Park they tried Estes’ auto. Angell started the car and could not control it, smashing four poles at full speed. He vows to avoid inventions after the crash and warns about a “Digs wagon” twisting on him.
June 28 at Saga more Hill Colonel Roosevelt meets with EB A Vanyal Kkenburg Philadelphia William Flinn Pittsburgh and George W Perkins among progressive leaders. Perkins conferred with the colonel to arrange an August convention of the new party, with expected details to be worked out.
Bankhead of Alabama and other leaders pursue a nomination as Bryan demands removal of Ryan and Belmont. The hall erupts in uproar, votes split, and Clark, Wilson, Underwood, Harmon, and others receive varying support. After a long night the convention adjourns without a ticket, contending for a second ballot and possible dark horse hope.
Baltimore, June 28. Conservatives joined with progressives to press Bryan to push a resolution opposing any candidate tied to Ryan, Morgan, Belmont, or similar wealth interests. The conservatives aim to force the nomination while branding Bryan as Democratic Party representative this fall, promising retaliation. signs point to a rift between Bryan and party bosses.
Madison June 28 Senator La Follette issues a signed editorial denouncing Roosevelt for his lavish presidential campaign and ties to steel and harvester interests. He accuses Roosevelt of allying with Aldrich, siding with Taft in 1910, and failing to present a coherent progressive platform. He warns progressives will resist any special interest dominance.
Baltimore June 28 A subcommittee of eleven drafting a six thousand word platform for the Democratic National Convention resumed at noon Senator O Gorman and Bryan finished the draft Bryan modeled and O Gorman penned in his famous diction The committee reviewed the draft section by section and expected completion before the afternoon session There is no prospect of a priority report.
Baltimore scenes show Wilson gaining 21 votes while Clark loses four since the first ballot. On the third ballot Clark leads Wilson 441 to 345 with other tallies and state shifts from Montana Oregon and Washington. A second ballot shows Clark 446.5 to Wilson 293.5 with Harmon and Underwood trailing. Delegates brace for a lengthy session as party unity strains and key state delegations swing status quo.
In Grand Rapids Michigan today L H Schurman a wealthy Carrollton Kentucky manufacturer shot Miss Elizabeth Mogse 28 of Lyons Michigan during a taxi ride. He then fired two bullets into his own head as police closed in. Miss Mogse had reportedly refused to marry him.
The Pendleton Elks Circus Parade wowed crowds with a gay glittering pageant, featuring animal cages, riders on horses, bands, clowns, elephants, giraffes, zebras, floats, and numerous performances. Marching marshals led the procession, followed by the Round-up band and prominent Elks figures. Page continues on page five.
