Trade Falls Off After Panic Boosts Foreign Sales

Henry Clows analyzes how the financial panic lifted exports temporarily through forced liquidation and a $100,000,000 gold import spike. November to February saw record exports totaling 785,000,000, but March to May wiped gains. Seven months post panic show imports down 40 percent, while 12 months to May reveal a large export surplus and a strengthened foreign credit. The gold export rebound and heavy domestic gold production imply a high national gold stock.
