Washington June 23 Senator Mc Cumbers amendment to the tariff pill fixing the rate of a dollar a thousand on rough lumber was defeated today by a vote of 24 to 44. Fourteen Republicans voted for the amendment and eleven Democrats supported the high rate. McCumber then sought an amendment reducing the differential to cover finished lumber costs and arguing the Aldrich bill overstates the difference in U.S. and Canadian production costs.

Spokane, Wash, June 23. United States Deputy Marshal Proy arrived from the Indian Agency at Miles with an Indian named Simon Silas charged with murder. In a drunken brawl June 4 at Little Falls on the Spokane river, Silas is accused of shooting his half brother George with a 12 gauge shotgun from about ten feet, injuring him fatally. George died June 14 after being taken to Miles Hospital. Silas had been employed by the Washington State Water Power company on the Little Falls power plant project.
