Escape Prosecution by Testifying Against Others Over Frauds
The American Sugar Refining company has returned about $500,000 to the government to avoid further prosecution. A tentative plan would force leading sugar trust figures to reveal dealings with government employees, welters, and checkers. Those implicated would be punished while sugar trust representatives go free in exchange for testimony. Wealthy men connected with an independent refinery, which opposed the sugar trust, are also expected to be arrested. The sugar trust claims it gained from the frauds and supplied evidence against its officers for the profit.
