Old "Knock Knee" Bear Slain After Fatal Gunshot Wound
Old Knock Knee the famed black bear of Upper Cheteo southwest of Josephine County is slain after trying to bite a hunter and forcing a rifle shot. He weighed 820 pounds and measured eight feet four inches, with 17 bullets and many slugs found in his body. Ranchers had long feared the marauder who killed goats cattle and horses, and united to hunt him after years of depredations. The bear’s death ends a long campaign and is noted with a brief mention of Dr. Smith and a related Ohio political item.
