June 17 in Wilkes-Barre Pa reports the strike has stalemated as leaders claim all miners are out but vow the campaign is not finished. They hint railroad participation may follow and that the federation may urge a three day halt by workers nationwide to avert a crisis.
Portland hosts a veteran gathering as Oregon fighters recount historic days. About 400 veterans and families attend the annual event at G Hall into the afternoon with recitations and music by Accompanists Adelia Luce and Anna Ditchburn. The veterans’ association planned lunch, with sons and grandsons joining at noon and a 6 pm meal.
Washington June 17 A senate fight looms over the omnibus statehood bill. Quay gave notice he will move Thursday to discharge the committee on territories from further consideration of the act admitting Arizona New Mexico and Oklahoma as states. The committee recently voted narrowly against reporting the bill this session.
Night Watchman Miller shot a burglar at Cottingham's lumber office during a 2 am break in. Harrison stood by his remark that Hopkins could not be reelected without boodle, sparking insults before friends intervened to avert a fight.
Washington June 17 At a cabinet meeting it was decided one or two war ships would be sent to Venezuela to protect American interests amid the revolution. President Roosevelt is anxious over the lack of a reply to his message to Minister Bowen at Caracas. The senate Cuba committee backed the Spooner bill granting 20 percent reciprocity with Cuba for five years with safeguards for Cuban planters. Perkins of California urged the Nicaragua route against Panama canal property as risky and potentially entangling the U S in vast political and financial trouble.
New York reported by J L Ray & Co shows wheat dull as weather improves and cables hold steady. Opened at 76 to 76 1 2, with declines and closings around 7 to 176 1 2. key names include St Paul and Union Pacific. regional quotes from Portland Chicago and San Francisco list wheat at various levels.

He was arraigned shortly after arrest.

President Penrose reports gifts to Whitman College totaling sixty thousand dollars toward an endowment and the girls dormitory. Dr. Pearsons pledged fifty thousand if twenty six thousand for dormitory funds is raised, with contributions from Ankeny and the Smiths enabling Heynolds Hall naming and the dormitory’s completion.
