Reports detail heavy fighting around Port Arthur with Russian and Japanese forces. Japanese torpedo boats laid mines, a Russian fleet escaped to Tsushima, and bombardment near Shum piangtao occurred as both sides engaged in reconnaissance and naval exchanges. The harbors remained active as authorities and troops prepared for further maneuvers.
San Francisco June 11 ex Mayor Roland Snow was shot in Oakland by Adolph Goldman a local crockery store proprietor. Snow is in precarious condition and Goldman was arrested. The hearing was postponed until Saturday with self defense and hypnotism as his anticipated pleas. Goldman and Snow had become intimate friends, then fell out as Goldman grew jealous and reportedly attempted Snow's life on several occasions.
A Sunday school trip on the steamship Slocum bound for Locust Grove ends in disaster with a fire sweeping the vessel. Between 100 and 500 people, mostly women and children, perish or are injured as chaos erupts near North Brother Island. Rescue crews search the Sound, recover dozens of bodies, and battle fires aboard the burning hull.
Fire early today in Oroville destroys a block of stores with losses estimated at 190000 dollars. The blaze started at the Palace restaurant from a boiler explosion. Twenty eight firms occupy the chamber of commerce quarters and Mercury office among the affected properties including saloons grocers dry goods stores and several doctors offices.
Shaniko June 16 The second wool sale of the season sold about nine million pounds under sealed bid. Prices ranged from 14 to 16 percent lower than June 1 for good and choic es wool. Principal buyers included Lafayette Worsted Co Woonsocket AL Whitman Farnaworth Thayer Boston Alex Lixingstone Boston Botany Worsted Mills Passaic N J and Hallowell Donald & Co Keuton. Next and last sale set for July 1 with a large total expected.
New York on June 16. The White Star line announced a steerage fare of 8.76 dollars. Cunard will not attempt to match the cut. The next move likely to follow in eastbound sailings.
Baker City June 1 Detectives hired by the Cooke and Walters Union investigate the murder of Thomas F. W. Suttle found dead in an O B R box car on train No 23 at Weatherby. The body showed signs of prior death before departure from Huntington. Suttle, a member of the American Detective Association, pursued a fugitive from justice.

The Weaton State Normal School board renewed A C French as president for another year and elected Mrs Marguerite Tone matron of the girls ball. J W Serther of La Grande was re elected president of the board of regents P A Worthington of Portland secretary and J R Kilgore treasurer. The executive committee includes A C French chairman William Blakley and M Saxon. The board praised the school’s past year and held back some faculty selections for a future meeting.
A News special from Granada Colorado reports that Utah and New Mexico border deportations displaced hundreds of miners after they observed Mineral Union Day. Deportees arrived in Denver and Holly, Colorado, recounting rough treatment yet some praise for hospitality along the road.
Washington June 15 Attorney General Knox declines comment but sources say he plans to retire within days or after becoming a United States senator from Pennsylvania Moody current Secretary of the Navy to replace him after a president approved transition and cabinet reshuffle is expected.
