Echo Oregon June 11. H B Smith Echo hardware dealer exchanged words with a drunken transient near his store. Smith drew an automatic pistol and attempted to fire over the man’s head. The weapon discharged when struck, the bullet grazing the intruder’s neck as the fight ended. Smith says he carries the gun for night travel along the river where vagrants encamp.
Wounded man Thomas Lamphere lies in Royal Hospital with a neck wound whose seriousness is undetermined. Doctors warn neck injuries are dangerous and complications may follow. Lamphere, who recalls nothing, has not spoken publicly. Deputy District Attorney Newberry says no charges yet and will visit Echo to probe who is responsible.
Bloodhounds following a bloody trail found a handkerchief seven miles southeast of Villisea in the Moore family massacre. Prints on an axe in the boys’ room are under expert study while crowds flood the town and militia guards the Moore home acting as a temporary morgue. Four men rumored to have slept in railroad yards the night of the killings have vanished.
Mrs J B Dungan and her son left last evening for a brief visit with friends in Spokane and will travel on to Wenatchee to join her husband, continuing their trip in the region.

Thomas Curry is wanted for assault with a dangerous weapon after a camp tender for rancher Charles Johnson claimed Curry threw rocks injuring him and fired twice as he rode away. Deputy Joe Blakely traveled toward California to detain Curry following the alleged quarrel over property crossing.
London June 11 indications today show the general strike of dockmen and allied trades failed to draw broad support with fewer than one fifth of union workers outside London joining. Strikers clashed with police on East India docks as Scotch Welsh ports and Liverpool still operated. The cabinet met in a special session to review the strike situation.
Mrs Jack Wohlenberg departed this afternoon on the Northern Pacific train bound for Helix to visit Mrs Eastridge, formerly Miss Myrtle Knight, during a short stay in the city.

Los Angeles June 11 A former hotel clerk K A Dickeleman testified that Bert Hammerstrome Clarence Darrows brother in law bribed him to stay out of California during McNamara trial offering 30 a week. Also Gustine Jean Fitzpatrick a defense detective turned state witness testified he aided Cooney in warning men to hide to escape jury service under Darrows instruction.
Freewater Commercial Club revived after years of dormancy with new officers including John Vincent as president and James P. Neal as secretary. The reorganized group, now in Bradley-Farish hall, aims to promote local industry and county resources and plans a Peach Day festival in August.
Washington June 11 by unanimous vote the house judiciary committee decided to report favorably Representative Berger s resolution recommending investigation of the official acts of Federal Judge Hanford of Seattle The resolution will be favorably reported to the house tomorrow Representatives Berger and Norris presented the impeachment charges to the committee If the house adopts the Berger resolution three congressmen will go to Seattle

Patrick Horan, a former saloon man of Stockton, writes from Ireland that he was unable to sail and would not have made the Titanic trip. He says he will remain in Meenoline, Ireland, for some time yet and was reported drowned at the time of the wreck.
Washington dispatch reports Congressman Robert C. Wyckliffe of Louisiana was struck and killed by a train while on a bridge over the Potomac in South Washington. His wife Mrs Wyckliffe fainted in the House chamber as the death was announced and proceedings were halted.
The East Oregonian announces a vacation subscription contest with two Shetland ponies as top prizes. Pendleton city prizes include a pony, a gold watch, and a diamond ring. County prizes feature a pony outfit, a watch, and a diamond ring. Entries run June 15 to September 21 with votes for subscriptions and work orders. Participants earn a 10 percent cash commission on new subscriptions.
In Chicago June 11 the Taft forces push to crush Roosevelt with calls to sacrifice Taft if needed. Cummins and La Follette delegates threaten a convention deadlock. Borah defends Irish Indiana at large vote while Roosevelt aides fault the decision.
William H. Barnes Jr, chairman of the New York state Republican committee, arrived in Chicago on June 11 to counter reports that 34 New York delegates favor Roosevelt. He was instructed to keep delegates aligned with Taft amid bitterness from the national committee toward Roosevelt supporters. Talks of a compromise candidate follow the tension.
Governor Walter R. Stubbs of Kansas arrived in New York and met with Colonel Roosevelt and Roosevelt aides led by George W. Perkins. Stubbs declined to reveal his mission as the talks continued with Roosevelt associates.
