Fire destroyed the Robertson residence at 16 Vincent street Saturday night, with heavy losses to the dwelling, contents, and related outbuildings. The Tallman house on the next lot suffered severe scorching. fire origin is unknown. Insurance covers most losses. tenants had recently moved out and kept keys, and residents suspect a trash burn and faulty flue.
Julia Walker known as Red Wings, the girl horsethief, is jailed in Pendleton after being captured at her mother's John Day home by Jess Goff under Sheriff T. Ed. Taylor. She had escaped from Morrow County deputies a week earlier with Willis Jordan, fleeing on her horse stolen from John Grenlich of the city. The captors expect to recover the horse and bring it in later.
Cincinnati June 2 The trial of George B Cox once political czar of Cincinnati and four Cincinnati Trust Co officials began today charged with removing a 350000 note from bank assets. Cox and his associates allegedly used the note on orders from the state banking department to obscure bank capital shrinkage. Later the company merged with another bank and Cox and his associates withdrew the note.
The tearful declaration today of Fred Ekolb claims Irene Noble threatened suicide and a revolver discharged during a struggle, possibly wounding the girl. Miss Nettle Roulstone, guest of Mrs. Sam Rh. Thompson, plans to depart tonight for home in Walla Walla.
London reports Alfred Austin poet Laureate died today of senile debility. The passing marks the end of a prolific career in verse and public literary service.
Edward Payson Weston, a man in his seventies from New York, begins a 1400 mile trek to Minneapolis. He plans to reach the city in about 60 days and will rest on Sundays.
Washington June 2 members of the house ways and means committee presented the democratic caucus with nominations for committee assignments. The chairmanships listed include banking and currency Glass judiciary Clayton rivers and harbors Sparkman merchant and marine Alexander agriculture Lever foreign affairs Flood military affairs Hay rules Henry labor Lewis roads Shackleford.
Will M. Peterson, local lawyer and democratic party chair, and a friend rode the wrong train from Pilot Rock after a weekend picnic. They realized the error at the depot when a Pendleton-bound passenger car waited. Peterson warned locals to catch the correct train before the Overland’s return, barely making the homeward trip as reported by R. W. Fletcher.
In a fit of jealousy E. W Allen shot and killed Mrs. Geo Flecher and then shot himself. He fired three shots at the woman's husband who tried to enter the room where Allen had confined himself and the woman.
Fire rips through the War Eagle mine shaft in Rossland, described as western Canada’s largest silver and lead mine. The shaft house is destroyed and reports do not confirm any fatalities. Dispatches from Nelson report the blaze but give no casualty details.
