Former La Grande stockman speaks on Alberta

Robert Wallace once a renowned La Grande stockman, now a cattleman in Alberta, visited the city while en route home to the north. He praised southern Alberta but, as a Canadian citizen, notes many eastern Oregon comforts surpass Alberta. He recalls last spring a storm killed about 60 percent of range cattle, leaving miles of deep coulees and gulches amid the odor of rotting carcasses. He adds that some settlers may be mistaken in plowing rich range land to make farms.
