At Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla guard Fred Staff shot and killed John Allen and wounded Joseph Reed as convicts fought with scissors in the jute mill toilet. Allen died from a chest wound. Reed suffered a near elbow wound.
Pittsburg July 27 striking employees of the pressed steel car company are expected to resume work at McKeeys Docks plant next Friday. C A Wise, chairman of the strikers executive committees, announced a meeting with company officials. The 1907 wage scale being adopted is satisfactory to the employees.
Yreka Cal July 27 Joseph Baltes is held for examination on insanity after entering a Siskiyou county bank and demanding $2850. He said he had defeated Jim Jeffries in Chico days earlier and that the money was due him, declaring Jeffries too big to knock out and that the sponge was thrown.
In Los Angeles a ten year old boy named Jesse Kinkley struck eight year old Levitt Irbin on the head with a croquet mallet after a dispute during a game. The blow fractured the skull and Levitt died at noon. The ten year old will not be prosecuted.
In Butte a horse shot itself by stepping on a cartridge while a Coos Bay horse died in a stranger way. The Bay tragedy involved a horse hitched to a North Bend delivery wagon that backed over a wharf into the water after a command to back was given but no stop command followed.
Portland reports hogs advanced to 9.50 dollars per hundred pounds in the stock yards, the highest price on record. The gain surpasses all previous records by 35 cents, based on prices recorded over the past 24 hours.
Berkeley July 27 An expert in household economy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology cites surprising figures. Ellen H Richards notes only one family in seven owns a bathtub and only one in four with income under eleven hundred dollars can afford one. She also says men spend more on clothes than women with $33 versus $25, while boys and girls spend $15 to $12.
Rome July 27 The next consist ory for creating new cardinals is announced for mid November. Likely candidates include Archbishop Farley New York Dellachiess Belgna Amette Paris Cabrieres Mirseilles Bouurne London Mis trangie Florence Bers Falenle Bislet Giustini Demestel and several apostolic delegates to Washington and Vatican officials.
Seattle July 28 The fourth annual reunion of the Elks in Washington convened at 10 a m in the Alaska building lodge rooms. After public exercises delegates met in executive session feature was the address by J A Sammig the new grand exalted ruler.
The Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company is laying a heavy gravel blanket on the Pendleton Umatilla line to reduce dust. A steam shovel loads gravel and special gravel trains run the material to the site. This is the largest ballast program seen here in years. The company has also relaid fifteen miles of track between Umatilla and Coyota with 73 pound rails. Old rails are sent to Buckley for Lake Creek and Coeur d'Alene branches.
Secretary Carpenter replies to Governor Benson that President Taft may or may not undertake a western trip this fall. If he decides to go, he will give careful consideration to Salem’s wishes. The letter, dated July 27, is addressed to the governor.
Marshfield Oregon on July 27 reports say a grave of an Indian girl near Empire was robbed for relics while the body may have been burned to conceal the crime. A skull and bones were found and the coroner investigated as references to a past grave-robbing offender who served time.

Annapolis July 27 Officers and soldiers present at Lieut James Suttons death in Oregon will be defendants in the court of inquiry led by Judge Voranate The mother Mrs Sutton is to be prosecuting witness The hearing is postponed until next week when Lieut Utley a newly designated defendant will arrive The ruling followed the introduction of Mrs Suttons letter to the navy department requesting the inquiry
New York July 27. John J Rockefeller plans to distribute millions to charity. He intends to give directly to the poor through Rockefeller channels and a properly incorporated company will handle the funds. The exact method remains unconfirmed but the money is to be given outright to those in need.
On July 27 two men accosted A. A. Lillsott, postmaster for Aldentrag Telan ae, at a street corner in San Francisco. They held him at gunpoint and forced him to surrender a bag of government papers and about one hundred dollars in coins, then fled. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Scores were injured and twelve killed in Barcelona after a public demonstration against Spain’s Morocco war turned into a riot. Troops fought rioters. the dead include a military captain and three gendarmes. Reports also note Moor forces and tribal mobilization around Mililla and Meilila with potential Spanish losses.
Joldendale Wash July 27 Ed Sellers 11 year old son of J H Sellers road supervisor and pioneer of Klickitat county was found dead yesterday at noon from an accidental gunshot wound. The body lay in the timber breaks three miles northeast of Goldendale with the boy’s dog guarding him. A search by locals led to discovery in the Little Klickitat river canyon near Hanging Rock along the old Yakima road. The theory is the shot occurred as he sat on a log and the father suspects the shotgun discharged accidentally. His grandfather Thomas Hendryx, an elderly pioneer, died in a similar locality during a forest fire incident recently.
Chicago July 27 Indications are that Joline and Lewis Frank the saloonkeepers have bought immunity by turning state's evidence in the present investigation into the alleged vice prosecution. State Attorney Weyman asked their names be stricken from the indictment. The indicted men were arraigned and their case continued to the September term. Inspector McCann pleaded not guilty and a trial date in September was set. The grand jury returned eleven new indictments against other resort keepers on the west side, with expected offers to turn the indicted men to evidence.
Last year Scotland saw a monthly average of 2762 prisoners in custody, the highest figure in fifty five years, marking a new long term peak for the system.

Orville Wright completed a two and a half mile flight at Fort Myer under adverse winds with President Taft watching. The test lacked a passenger and followed a fatal prior attempt ten months earlier. Spectators cheered as the aeroplane rose, swerved, and landed safely after three circuits.
