Indians Challenge Hair Cut by Indian Agent
Three Indians sue the government for $600 each over hair cutting ordered by Yuma Indian agent John F Spear. The case recalls a prior Umatilla incident where Wheet-aoot had hair cut by agent George W. Harper, leading to damages cited under the Dawes act and the government’s evolving status of Indians. The court histories note the issue of an Indian’s right to wear hair as he pleases, not a convict.
