Lewiston July 25 The grain market opened with wheat quoted at 68 cents for cloth and 58 cents for bluestem. Barley rose to 87 cents for feed barley and 7 cents for brewing, oats at 1 cent, and flax up from 40 cents to 2 cents. Exporters were inactive but expect a busy season once deliveries start. Conditions are favorable for good prices and a prosperous farming year in Lewiston.
The first car load of peach plums was shipped by the Walla Walla Produce Company yesterday. The season will be abort this year, but a large prime season is looked for this year. This will be at about the middle of August. The peach plums are rather soft and hard to ship. Onions are still coming in in large quantities and a carload of mixed vegetables to ship per day.
The Oregon Sunday Journal reports Sheriff Tom Ward closed Portland’s large gambling houses Saturday evening. By 4 pm six houses ran, by 5 pm all were deserted except staff. The sheriff ordered closures personally with no resistance. Bond for each man set at $100. warrants served and arrests made at the courthouse.
The asbestos curtain for the new opera house in Lewiston was received and installed weighing about 1 pint, placed in front of the scene curtain and to be lowered only during performances. It will not be lowered after seating and will stay in place until the show ends.
Fall River July 25 text and wage cuts trigger a mill strike. about 5,000 textile workers affected as mills push for a 12 percent wage reduction. Negotiations fail, conferences end without accord, and political influence is expected to force a resolution amid a harsh winter season. Allied trades likely to join. packing industry unrest also reported across cities with intermittent strikes and guard actions.
Whitman conservatory of music will add Miss Alice Reynolds to the piano department as instructor with charge of juvenile work. Reynolds, known locally, was on St Paul’s school faculty last year and studied in San Francisco.
A mass meeting of citizens is set for this evening at 8 o’clock in the Commercial Association parlors. Tom Richardson of the Portland Commercial Club will discuss the Oregon Development League to be organized in Portland August 2. He tours Pendleton praising local industry and aims to unite Northwest commercial interests for mutual benefit and better state cooperation.
Portland July 26 The grand lodge of the Oregon a U W refuses to change the assessment unit as urged by the supreme lodge and many states. A new plan proposing a sinking fund and a small increase in the rate for members over 50 was adopted.
In Elizabethtown Kentucky Mrs Nation was violently struck twice with a chain by AK Neighbors a saloon keeper at Neighbors saloon after a confrontation. The incident left a scaly wound and is reported from Grande. Also note the Dillinger family fire tragedy claims the life of Jack Dillinger’s son Edward dying from injuries sustained in the blaze. Wheat and corn futures moved with July contracts opening varied prices in Chicago markets.
The State hotel safe in Walla Walla was robbed around midnight. Clerk Darice, new on the job, vanished with about $196.25 in checks and coin after asking a bartender to watch the office during his supper break. A warrant is out for his arrest. proprietor Koontz found $146.25 remaining.
Pendleton spends 70 on a novel patented fire nozzle with adjustable spray angles and remote operation. Fire Chief Withee and council praise the device as a simple, profitable investment enabling versatile water projection independent of hydrant or engine crews.
In Salem Justice Turner’s court the State v. J A Cooper ended with a guilty verdict after long deliberation for keeping a saloon open on Sunday. Sentencing is set for tomorrow and appeals are planned to circuit court. Ten cases remain to be disposed of, including selling liquor on election day, with further hearings to follow.

Two men report heavy grain losses at Adama after fires began Saturday. L L Rogers says he lost 110 acres on Saturday and 66 on Sunday, with 500 sacks threshed in his barn. Neighbor Louie Audette lost 40 acres, amid reports of fires possibly started by embers from careless children playing near a cook house.
