In Mexico City region rebel troops near the capital as Huerta orders federals to defense. Constitutionalists push forward amid critical situation as Washington debates intervention and U S politicians react to Mexico turmoil. Huerta seeks election by October with rivals exiled.
In near New York July 22 a government mediation board foresees an early settlement of rail labor disputes. A conference of train men and mediators is set for this afternoon to establish an arbitration basis. Officials of the Erie railroad may be urged to rejoin the talks or submit grievances to a separate arbitration board if needed.
In Jackson Mississippi 33 Black convicts sleeping on a second floor cage at a convict farm 20 miles southwest were cremated at midnight as flames raced through the old wooden structure. The fire started on the first floor and guards stood by as screams were heard for miles. Hay filled the lower floors and there was no escape.
At the Binghamton Overall Company plant disaster, about 134 people were inside when the blaze began. By 3 15, a large number of workers were unaccounted for and feared dead as flames spread to nearby structures.
Democratic Senator Jenders persuaded Chamberlain of Oregon to withdraw a record statement in the senate floor. He said he was not bound to back the tariff bill but as a western state senator he wanted more light on the issue.
Grants Pass Oregon July 22 During an electrical storm last night two women were struck by lightning and killed They were removing clothes from a time Mrs Kausek was killed instantly and Mrs Eddy died fifteen minutes later
Mrs Lena Danstrom wife of Peter Danstrom died at midnight at her brother A H Sunderman home on South Main Street from cancer after long illness. She had been with her brother since March and is survived by husband and several children. Remains will be shipped to Cresswell Oregon for interment.
Chicago July 22 Secretary Bryan and former vice president Fairbanks entered a dairy lunch counter depot interview where he bought grape juice and a large cantaloupe for four reporters. He refused to discuss politics or Mexican affairs. He is en route to Ocelwin Indiana to lecture.
Salem July 22 The supreme court voids Marion county district court ruling and upholds the special referendum election plan for next November as constitutional. The decision reverses a prior finding that the measure was unconstitutional.
Dispatches from Bucharest report Roumania willing to accept Bulgaria's peace terms. Greece and Servia favor open negotiations, with the end of the struggle believed near. Constantinople reports Turkish forces retook Adrianople in the name of the empire.
Washington July 22 A filibuster to block House business to force a declaration of the majority to let Republicans discuss the Diggs Caminetti case began with Representative Mann delaying the Journal approval for an hour.
Detroit owner Navin rejects reports of Cobb being traded to Boston for Tris Speaker and cash. He says no club could match Cobb's value to Detroit in cash or players.
In Mourmelon France on July 22 a soldier named Lamarre died when a biplane carrying him turned turtle. Lieutenant Gabriel, who guided the machine, was unhurt as he fell from the aircraft.
PORTLAND July 22 Rita and Carrie Lee aged 24 and 26 were drowned last evening when the canoe they rode in with Arthur Hergt and Alfred Mitchell capsized while returning from Oaks park. The four were thrown into the water and could not be saved. Their mother Mrs Fannie Lee lives in Pendleton. The girls were born in Pendleton and lived there as children. Their father Frank Lee once worked for the East Oregonian.
Portland July 22. Municipal court dismissed under suspended sentence a number of I. W. W. members and others from a recent disturbance at a local strike scene after a severe lecture. J. Cc. Knapp, once a lay brother at Mount Angel monastery, pleaded his calling for leniency. Several prisoners claimed they were drawn into the unrest. Walkentin, a German, was advised by the judge to return to his fatherland if unhappy with America.
The Oregon Supreme Court affirmed the lower court in Jackson county in imposing the death penalty on Mike Spanos and Frank Seymour for first degree murder. The remark about husbands and wives appears as an odd fragment in the report.
Prominent guests Franklin Lane secretary of the Interior and Theodore Roosevelt ex president are listed among visitors for the annual Round-Up. Lane is on a three week western trip after leaving Washington with planned stops including Monlang Pendleton and the Grand Canyon. Roosevelt hopes to extend his trip to Oregon if feasible to join the event on September 11.
Senator Murray of Oklahoma introduces a resolution demanding U S intervention in Mexico within 30 days if order is not restored The measure urges the president to issue a proclamation to Mexican factions to restore order protect Americans and their property and, if ignored, to use land and naval forces to establish peace and seize public property until compensation is made The resolution was referred to the foreign affairs committee
The Interstate Commerce Commission suspended until November 22 the increased flour rates from Kansas and other western states to California. The proposed tariffs average ten cents per hundred more than current charges.
The battleship Illinois arrives in Annapolis with the third class of the naval academy aboard after an extensive cruise. Departing in June, the ship visited Antwerp, Cadiz, Gibraltar, and Madeira Islands, among others, on the voyage.
Mrs Aura M Raley known as Aunty Raley mother of Pendleton dies after heart illness at 83 with funeral set for tomorrow at 10 in the Episcopal church Rev Charles Quinney to officiate Interment in Olney cemetery She was born August 23 1829 in Kennebec county Maine and later moved west with her family to Wisconsin and then Oregon where she helped establish early frontier life after a perilous journey across the plains

A socialists committee housed in an old Olive street church asks Mayor Cotterill to pay a 668 75 bill. The claim goes to the city council claims committee as the radical group plans a Labor temple meeting and a theater burlesque of a recent court trial. Ex congressman Victor Berger is slated for a August 5 gathering. Councilman Griffiths notes Mayor Cotterill’s order to close saloons and Times publication may set an improper precedent.
July 23 reports government action on socialist demands for an investigation into riots that damaged property and their headquarters. Interest has faded locally except among recall supporters. elites seek to block a mayoral recall through business pressure.
TARRYTOWN July 22 Flames were seen under the main stairway of a cottage on the Rockefeller estate at Cocanticnville the third house hit in three weeks Authorities fear arson. Rockefeller faced labor strife last fall and may have prompted revenge by discharged foreign workers.
In San Pernarding Cal July 22 an explosion tore through a dirty car as a laborer rammed a red hot rivet into its side. J Peres a laborer was instantly killed. A buildup of fumes was blamed for the blast.
U S officials warned Huerta seeks alliance with Japan to aid against the United States. Americans and British face growing danger as rebels raid federal and civilian targets across interior Mexico. President Wilson weighs intervention, may recognize belligerency to avoid full involvement. Obregon status denied. Simpich notes he is alive near Nogales. The president spent the day focused on the Mexican crisis with cabinet away on vacation.
London report says six women arrested with Mrs Pankhurst were convicted of disturbing the peace. Each received imprisonment ranging from two to three weeks.
In Washington on July 22 Smoot denounced the Underwood bill placing calamities in every schedule and ridiculing the free list. Weeks Townsend and Simmons indicated limited Democrat defense and a plan for extended discussion by Republicans to maintain near continuous debate on the measures.
Giles S. ail district attorney filed in Marion County Circuit Court to enjoin the secretary of state from placing a November referendum on the compensation act. The suit cites alleged gross fraud in petition signatures, including 800 signers who signed twice and more than 4640 alleged nonregistered voters.
