A local report from Walla Walla notes an escapee named Patil returned after a meat theft incident weeks ago. Police say the suspect fled city limits and was recaptured near the state line. Investigators are examining how the theft occurred and identifying accomplices.
Charles Peterson, a patient at Eastern Oregon state hospital, was arrested in Walla Walla early Friday while stealing a side of bacon. He escaped the hospital about two weeks ago after a prior arrest for ham theft two months earlier in Union county. His record includes an 18 month term in the California penitentiary for similar offenses. Superintendent McNary commented on the case yesterday.

Portland exporter Mr. Houser predicted completion of the Panama canal would boost grain prices for farmers in Umatilla county by seven to ten cents a bushel due to lower charter costs to Liver pool. He noted his estimate reflects industry views and that he was the coast’s leading grain exporter last year.

Japanese are rapidly replacing Caucasian chauffeurs in southern California, according to figures from the state motor vehicle department.
