In La Grande on Sunday morning Officer Frank Childers shot and killed William Hill an ex convict after Hill attacked the officer as he attempted to place handcuffs at the jail Hill had a history of thefts and assaults and officers found in his mountain cabin a cache of stolen items He had served two prison terms and was described as a desperate criminal The officer is not blamed and is praised for his conduct In other notes Dr G W Biggers reports a smallpox case in the area and Summerville baseball team returns from Wallowa with two victories 16 to 6 and 7 to 6 in a weekend series
London July 8 The official bulletin says King George's condition is improving and coronation dates remain uncertain. Colonial Secretary Chamberlain, injured when thrown from a cab Monday, is in hospital for absolute rest. In Parliament Morgan offers ships for Atlantic service but cannot yet be communicated to the house.
Last Friday afternoon the two year-old son of Mr and Mrs oO Smith died on Ben Dier mountain after falling from a wagon the right rear wheel passed over him. The remains were brought to Ontario and the funeral was held Saturday evening.
J Flynn traveling freight agent of the Missouri Pacific who recently became unbalanced in mind at Cot tage Grove is under treatment at the Mount Tabor sanitarium and is somewhat improved with hopes of full recovery.
Seattle July 8 A fruitless 125 mile chase for Tracy ends near Renton eight miles from Seattle where he held up a family today. A posse, bloodhounds, and three steamers patrol Puget Sound and Hood Canal as officers search the west shore for the desperado believed to have killed boatman Anderson. Sheriff Cudihee leads efforts with multiple counties aiding. Gerald reports Tracy gave him two watches, matching Johnson theft at Port Madison.
Officials weigh the truth of convict Tracy’s claim that he murdered fellow inmate David Merrill. Merrill’s body remains unfound as Tracy’s story varies in detail. Some believe Merrill alive, others doubt his fate. a sighting by Steve Judson is reported but unconfirmed.
The report notes two women asserting marriage to the desperado Tracy. Mollie Robinson, sister of Dave Merrill, is identified as the wife who fled with him, while a Chicago woman calling herself Mrs Minnie Tracy claims a 189% marriage and holds a certificate. Leanders beat Kingston for the grand challenge cup, Toronto Argonauts defeated University College in the second heat, and the Argonauts and Leanders were poised to meet in the final heat with Argonauts considered to have a fair chance. Chicago July 8 B W Pyle owner of one third of Greytown Nicaragua shot himself in the Garfield Park Sanitarium after years of investment and hope for a canal route. The 73 year old, now blind, grew despondent over political changes and his fortunes.
Davenport Iowa July 8 The national convention of Turners today decided to hold its next convention at Newark New Jersey in 1904.
Chicago July 8 Continued covering by shorts pushed July corn higher on the Board of Trade. Prices climbed from 84 to 85% after opening, reached 88 by midmorning, and touched 90 at noon before slipping to 87 at the close. Elevator interests and Gates Harris syndicate face possible private settlement or payment based on higher prices as contract corn and kiln dried stock face scrutiny.
Former Filipino leader Emilio Aguinaldo, freed by the July 4 amnesty, met General Chaffee at his camp. Lieutenant Johnson acted as interpreter as Aguinaldo asked for protection and to visit Cavite, saying he would go at night. Chaffee assured equal protection but could not grant immunity from civil testimony. Speculation of retaliation by Luna’s allies followed the release.
