Confused dispatches from Port Arthur describe renewed activity amid rain and siege lines. Reports claim Japanese forces recaptured lost positions. mediation talks sought to suspend hostilities in the Far East while operations continue. Meanwhile, other items note casualties, troop movements, and regional strategic shifts as authorities tighten control and consider further action.
July 2 report says the Botanie house was robbed of $2000 by masked men. Police chief and sheriff were wounded in the attack. Several accomplices are at large and room for investigation remains.
Baker City reports Kevelyn Loge a fireman killed Jack Halstead a saloon keeper four weeks ago was acquitted in circuit court. Jealousy and dispute over a widow linked to Halstead’s fiancée were cited as factors. Firemen and railway workers funded defense, presenting evidence Legg acted in self defense. Portland also notes Edwin Whitney arrested for forging timber land claims with federal court next session in the city.
Fire last night destroyed the Blue Mountain House in Saratoga. No injuries reported as guests escaped. Loss estimated at $60,000. resort will not open for the season.
Emmett July 2 Albert White who killed Thomas Hamilton Monday was removed last evening after examination showing he acted purely in self defense.

Umatilla County ships five hundred fifty cattle to the Sound market with 250 head crossbred from Camas Prairie and the rest fed cattle. L Stubblefield of Carstens Packing Co. says the Andrews herd, bought at Echo, is among the finest beef in the country. He plans to move south into the John Day Canyon country after a few days’ stay.
Billy Colb, famed vacquero of Umatilla County, roped a yearling elk near Hidaway Springs after chasing it on a horse. The animal bucked and dodged before Colb tightened the lariat, bringing the elk to camp where William Scott, owner of Hidaway Springs, paid 45 for it for the start of a zoological garden.
Reports from the Democratic convention scene indicate Parker backed by a large bloc of gonsveratives and delegates, with Williams shaping the platform draft and Maryland Gorman and others moving to place Parker on the ballot. Debates over the Kansas City platform, Mississippi platform, and potential temporary chairs fill the lead-up to St. Louis.
John D. Martin, veteran bugler from Custer’s command, survived the Little Bighorn massacre by being sent for reinforcements. He retired to Fort McHenry area, served 30 years in the army, and later reflected on the battle. Other items note Paul Delaney’s discharge and the Overland Hotel relocation event with over 200 pioneers at the farewell ceremony.

Boise July 2 the year old son of Rigmund Grass w ie drowned in an irrigating canal after falling from a foot bridge and being swept away before aid could reach him.
State Senator Walter M Pierce reports heavy frost damage in the Grand Ronde valley near La Grande. About 400 acres of winter wheat on Pierce Prothers will be cut for hay, leaving other crops less affected as cattle feed and market timothy and red top. Several crops damaged beyond recovery, with some to make poor hay. In separate items, Major Bingham receives early retirement due to earlier Meeow incident, and Triplett is accidentally killed by Hall during a hunting trip in South Bend.
Pendleton’s faithful hose team trains on Court Street at 6 am for the Walla Walla race on the Fourth. Manager Nolf aims for a 26 second hub run over 200 yards. Several locals may enter individual races for attractive purses, with travel planned for tomorrow morning.
