Miners Fight Near Tonopah Turns Deadly Clash

In Goldfield Nevada on January 29 a pitched battle between union and non union miners at Clifford s on the Manhattan road left Jack Gin eu lies dead and George Cole wounded. Eight non union men were arrested by Sheriff Tom Logan to avert lynching as authorities moved in after the clash that followed a dispute over wages. A second item reports Austin Francis denied new trial and scheduled to hang March 15 for the murder of Winona Lewton in Kanene City.

Horse Thief Arrested In Oregon Territory Case

William Lafferty known as Chuck Hays was arrested by Deputy Hay-Hand three miles north of Smith Springs on the Snake river breaks for horse stealing. He is accused of taking several horses from John Rogers of Prescott in early January and driving them into eastern Oregon. He will be taken to Prescott for a preliminary hearing date to be set.

San Francisco on January 29 reports the Sanita Barbara reached the harbor last night after a tempestuous voyage from Seattle. The storm nearly wrecked the ship as seas swept the decks flooded the cabins and at one point there was three feet of water in the hold.

Demurrer Sustained in Jewett Perjury Indictment Case
