In San Francisco on January 27 Captain Courles of the steamer Queen faced charges over the Valencia rescue attempt. Navy chiefs Jorgenson and Sullivan claimed no boat was launched. Courles denied the accusation, saying he would not have allowed the lifeboat even if volunteers urged it. The Queen had arrived from Victoria with 64 American sailors aboard.

First Carload of Pendleton Butter Shipped East

The first carload of butter from Pendleton is headed to Seattle. Packed in two pound bricks from the Blue Mountain Creamery, it totals over 40,000 pounds and is part of output from the Pendleton area. Consolidation of creameries in Union La Grande and Pendleton completes a company plan to establish two new cheese plants in Wallowa county to serve the eastern Oregon district.

A meeting of the Umatilla County woolgrowers at the Commercial Penetration parlors discussed dipping corrals and vats for Meacham or Kamela, considered a replacement for J E Bean as stock inspector, with Altino Knotts proposed. Flour Trust Moves to Raise San Francisco Prices

A San Francisco report says a millers and grocers combine has ordered higher flour prices. The Globe, American and Del Monte mills allegedly issued orders to grocers to raise prices by about 60 cents per barrel starting January 25. Department stores may enter by selling Oregon and Washington flour to undersell regular grocers, with the State Grocers' Association implied to back the move to boost profit on flour.

River rapids repair urged for year-round navigation

Mayor Edward Shepperd of Kennewick remanded a memorial prepared by the local Commercial club for Senator Ankeny in Congress. The plea urges immediate government appropriation to clear Homley and Umatilla rapids on the Columbia River to restore navigation, estimating 4000 to 5000 dollars spent now could allow year-round river steamers to navigate at low water.

A large band of mangy ponies roams the northern county range near the East Umanltla government Irrigation project. Stockmen report the small ponies are exhausted and appear abandoned, likely turned out by owners to die, prompting complaints about their presence on the range.
