Havana January 28 The lone star flag of the Cuban republic floated from the Palace Del Presidente as Governor Magoon formally surrendered American control to President Gomez whose inauguration followed the withdrawal. Ceremonies took place in the red room of the police with five military parades and fireworks at night.
Sacramento January 2 1913 Senator Anthony Caminetti introduced in the legislature a bill enabling Californians to express by ballot their preference for the United States Senate seat. The proposal mirrors Oregon's law and seeks voter input on the office.
Albany Ore Jan 28 The mixed train on the C E road between Albany and Detroit wrecked late yesterday afternoon at Shelburn six cars smashed but the passenger car at the rear remained on the track no injuries reported
Union City Tennessee January 28 The jurors in the Edward Marshall night rider murder case report they were unable to agree and were discharged The panel stood ten to two for acquittal in the Reel Foot Lake outrages case involving Captain Rankin.
Salem Jan 28 The Joint committees on ways and means from both houses met but did not reach consensus on any bill. Don P Symthe secretary of the Oregon Wool Growers Association urged continuation of a 1907 appropriation of 12 000 for state sheep inspection by a board of commissioners. Representative Campbell urged a 2 500 appropriation to buy the John McLoughlin home. An unfavorable report was filed in the House on Representative Publin’s anti trust bill deemed too vague and burdensome to business. The House railroad committee favored bills for toilet facilities on Interurban cars and appointing peace officers for steamboats and trains. The committee also considers Brandon’s bill to reduce passenger fare to 2 1/2 cents per mile.
Salem January 24 the Baker and Umatilla delegations have a bill for a branch asylum to be located by a commission and the general port commission bill passed the house and go to the senate without opposition. A resolution prohibits Ali lobbyists from house courtesies by removing them. Marnier introduced a BI A for Portage railroad extension to Big Eddy. Orton's bill taxing gross earnings of corporations will be withdrawn.
Robert Bradley, accused of making counterfeit half dollars and quarters, is jailed after a clash with three Secret Service men. His partner Jessica Livingston scratched Detective McMahon during the raid as officers closed in on their oceanfront bungalow plant. The couple’s two sacks of newly struck coins served as key evidence. Bradley will be arraigned tomorrow.

W B Ayer of the normal school board submits to the governor a dissent urging legislative appropriations for two state normal schools located in eastern and western Oregon. He argues current funding is inadequate, wasteful, and that one or more schools should be consolidated for quality facilities and instruction. He cites enrollment, building conditions, and prior reports to justify reduced school count and better capital outlays.
In Aberdeen Washington Rev A H House halted his sermon mid service and raised two umbrellas in the pulpit asking for owners. He then claimed the umbrellas were stolen from the church and that police officers stood at the back ready to file charges. The service resumed after police gathered the needed complaints.
Washington January 28 A vigorous and utilized campaign by representatives of Oregon Washington and California for large appropriations for better naval stations on the Pacific coast was checked upon today by the congressmen and senators from the coast. Cr G Oleson of Athena returned home yesterday after a brief visit to his family in this city.
New York Jan 28 Randolph G Ward consulting engineer assumed full responsibility for engineering operations in the canal zone in a statement to the press He exonerated William Nelson Cromwell and Charles P Taft and said he alone is responsible for the enterprise He challenged Henry T Rainey to suggest a more feasible fairer or effective development plan for the territory amid a feud with Roosevelt administration supporting papers over the Panama canal purchase.
Tacoma January 28. Miv Peone an Indian girl arrested on drunkenness offered Desk Sergeant Raymond 3000 cash and a kiss to teleaise her from the city jail. She carried 30,000 in cash in a bank and owned valuable lands left by her father. Though intoxicated she was mortified by arrest and imprisonment. She was fined and released today.
Cincinnati report says Atlas Telford, a colored youth, killed William Waudbold and fatally shot William Britt and Charen Ruff, all white, yet was not charged with murder. He testified he acted in self defense while pursuing law studies, claiming race prejudice blocked his ambitions.
Reports from private Pekin sources say the Chinese boy emperor Hu Pu Yi is ill with confluent smallpox. The illness was reported from Tokio with the date January 28.
Atlanta on January 24. Mayor Maddox calls Harriman a grunting enigma after a city visit in which Harriman answered every question with a grunt, likening it to an Indian gesture.
Professor Sheldon of the state university at Eugene cites expert opinions on normal schools. Among 61 teachers studied only 16 were rated good while the rest were fair or poor. Experts largely favor smaller schools for better training, with suggested enrollments between 200 and 1000, leaning toward the lower end.
Forty persons were injured today when the eastbound Evansville accommodation and passenger train on the Southern railroad wrecked emerging from a tunnel near New Albany across the Ohio River. Some reports say fatalities are possible. The incident occurred in Louisville Kentucky with crews aiding the injured and investigating the cause.
Eye witness accounts describe men on the Republic as craven cowards insisting on being saved first. A clubman boasted his life mattered more than a hundred women until a young officer restrained him at gunpoint. Senator Graves of Spokane led the defense to send the measure to judiciary, arguing the code to be presented by the prosecuting attorney covers the matter. The house spent time on procedure while a late clash arose over the eight hour law for women.
