Pembleton Oregon January 25 East Oregonian reports the fire chief perished in a blaze as firefighters battled a blaze threatening local stores. The incident drew a swift response from the town’s emergency services and caused extensive property damage.
Portland cops identify Olten, the Chinese fugitive linked to a Seid Bing murder, as Ang Goey’s wife of Pendleton. Local officers and residents recognize the photograph. Goey is silent. Mrs Goey, once a noodle shop owner on Alta Street, faced past disputes and a 1903 marriage to Judge FitzGerald.
Portland merchant Ben Selling, president of the Institute, signals potential candidacy for Oregon Senate. In letters to prominent politicians he says he is receptive if the people demand his entry and attacks the incumbent as non resident and an Aldrich Republican masquerading as a progressive. He cites two decades as a progressive leader and seeks opinions on his candidacy.
Tonight a poultry show in the armory draws growing interest as exhibitors gain notice. Judge Miller Purvis will lecture on chickens and officers of the association will be elected with stockholders urged to attend. Re-election chances loom for president D C Gurdane of Heppner and secretary Brown may not return. Numerous awards announced include W F Cargill Clarkston for Rhode Island Reds and J R Cromb Stanfield for Wyandottes with many more cups and placings across breeds.
In Wallula Washington on June 26 Special Assistant Chief Robert Wolf died after being overcome by smoke while aiding the Jensen Dry Goods store fire. Fireman William Davis suffered a broken leg and other injuries as flames doom the Jones block at Second and Alder. The blaze threatens Moose Lodge Hall, Caswell Cigar, Orment’s Saloon, and Gose & Gose offices with losses likely reaching hundreds of thousands. Fire crews battled flames without success through 8 pm. Wolf’s body remained unrecovered as of early evening. The origin of the fire had not yet been determined.
The Duke of Connaught arrived in New York greeted by no official welcome, but he praised the United States and Taft in remarks after meeting the president. As Canada’s governor general he said Canadian sentiment is and will be friendly and expressed admiration for American hospitality and the country’s people.

In Vancouver B C two unmasked robbers entered the Royal Bank at opening and forced clerks into a vault. They seized about $10,000 visible cash and escaped through a back door with ease.
Chicago Jan 26 packers trial heard that large areas were neutral territory where trusts enforced no sales restraints. The districts named included New Orleans San Francisco Portland Spokane Los Angeles and Balt Lake as they cooperated with independent firms.
Indianapolis January hearing before Judge Anderson on Leo Rappaport's petition for the Structural Iron Workers union to quash a grand jury subpoena. Rappaport argues producing John McNamara's checkbook would breach professional confidence and may reveal other dynamite case participants.
Silas N. Phelps, known as the Monroe bridge outlaw, was electrocuted at Charleston state prison for the killing of Deputy Sheriff Emmett F. Haskins at Monroe bridge on June 12, 1910. The current began at 12:15 and the execution concluded with a death pronouncement at 12:22.
Olympia January 24 The trial of former State Highways Commissioner Snow opened today charged with grand larceny by embezzlement for alleged failure to turn over 2100 dollars of state money held in trust.
London reports Montenegrins in the United States fund a revolution to overthrow the dynasty and set up a republic in Montenegro. Dispatches say Americans contributed $200,000 to the revolutionary committees at Belgrade.
Secretary J E Keefe of the Commercial association invites G P A lines in the northwest to Pendleton for the 1912 Round-up with plans for special trains from many points. Agents to meet in Seattle February. invitation hoped accepted then. Also notes 60 killed in a Guayaquil explosion and Gen Manardo Alfaro’s arrival with rebel troops on the British steamer Quito.
Secretary of the Interior will continue to hear Indian heirship cases. Senator Chamberlain had asked to restore jurisdiction to federal courts, but Fisher notes the new law places hearing power with the secretary after a year of operation. He cites better evidence from hearings and orders additional hearings when needed. Uncle Ike Stephenson referenced as a public figure in the debate.
Helix, Oregon heats up with a two story commercial building planned for club quarters and a new 20 mile rural route from Vansydle canyon to Juniper. The change will shift mail delivery to homes, closing the Juniper post office and star route from Helix. Local farmers express optimism as favorable recent weather improves grain prospects.
