New York January 24 A lawyer publicist C P Connelly claims courts are corrupted by big business and trusts. He details miscarriages of justice, names high corporate figures, and says he will prove judiciary involvement in market driven bias and paid for decisions. Connelly traces practices across state and federal courts.
President Bigelow warned at a constitutional convention in Columbus that the Ohio supreme court’s stance on the initiative and referendum could be repudiated by the people. He cited the northwest ordinance of 1787 and a State v Hoone ruling as grounds the court may strike down such measures, urging public opposition to prevent the court from nullifying approved initiatives.
A local man allegedly misused a corporate name in a communication opposing the West Extension Burgress project, signing as Pres. Umatilla Water Users Assn. The incident centers on fraudulently representing a corporate body in a public opposition document.
Secretary of the Interior Fisher reproves J N Burgess for signing a letter to President Taft as president of the Umatilla River Water Users association The incident involves a near identical name used by opponents to push the west extension of the Umatilla project and a forthcoming board of engineers report guiding the final decision on the extension.
Washington D C January 24 A postal bank will be established February 18 at Weston Oregon and will operate under the postal savings system.
Frederick Steiner a Pendleton attorney and Neil of Freewater appear to contend for the Republican nomination for district attorney. Steiner has not announced but may run in April, citing his deputy DA service and Pendleton residence as reasons. Van Vactor has been central to the discussion with no clear Democratic bid.
Danvers Mass January 24 guards battled with numerous insane patients trying to leap from windows during a fire at the state insane hospital. Guards finally knocked the patients out with clubs and it is believed all escaped.
S D Peterson, Milton lawyer and Umatilla county representative, plans to run again as an out and out progressive with No 1 pledge. He indicated his intent during a visit to the city, aiming to represent the east end of the county. He served in the last session with pro progressive forces and backed Jerry Rusk for speaker, earning committee posts. As of now no other candidates are certain to enter from the county.
A board of inquiry found Conductor Brainard and Flagman Breecker of train 36 and Engineer Stuart of train 8 negligent in the Kinundy wreck that killed Harran and three other railroad officials. The railroad itself received no blame.
In New York on January 24 the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and Princess Patricia faced cheering crowds as they arrived at the Stock Exchange. Police were later summoned to clear a path as they left amid a funeral procession, the hearse driver forcing a gap behind the royal car.
A young man’s body, chopped in two with legs removed, was found in a trunk at King Street station, Seattle. Police in Portland and Seattle investigate clues, with papers identifying Said Bong of Astoria as victim, though decomposition hinders confirmation.

Salem Oregon January 24 Mrs Ellen Ghangrow sues for divorce from Nicholas Ghangrow in Marion county circuit court charging desertion They formerly lived on the Umatilla Indian reservation near Pendleton where the defendant still resides An unusual request by the defendant for witnesses from Umatilla county was denied and a possible change of venue to Pendleton was noted One of Mrs Ghangrows former husbands died by suicide Ghangrow was formerly employed by Judge J A Fee of Pendleton.
Chicago Illinois January 24 the funeral of Colonel Harahan former president of the Illinois Central was held today Vice President Melcher funeral who was killed in a wreck was held at his Winnetka home All business except emergencies suspended on Rock Island and Central lines during the ceremonies
Communications received by the department on the proposed west extension include letters dated December 18 and December 4 1911 from Umatilla County Water Users Association Stanfield and Pendleton Oregon with presidents Burgess and Hemphill and secretary Hurd. Resolutions from Pendleton signed Umatilla River Water Users Association also accompany the correspondence.
Judges and exhibitors touted the Umatilla Morrow County Poultry association show as a sweepstake exhibition featuring top birds from Oregon state fair Portland Vancouver Walla Walla and Roseburg shows. Notables include EH Rosengranz Colfax with Linkenveldera chickens and BE Averill Milton Williams with best Buff Orpingtons. A one winged chicken owned by Felix Duke drew attention as did nearly perfect entries across barred Rocks Black Minorcas White Leghorns and Buff Orpingtons with awards announced through noon.
