Forty Diseases to Study at Oregon Agricultural College
The Plant Pathology Department at Oregon Agricultural College has moved to new quarters in the horticultural building and is cultivating about forty plant diseases in culture for close study. A pair of culture rooms, one tiled for growing cultures and another with electric stoves and gas equipment, support over a hundred cultures. Farmers statewide may send diseased fruit or vegetables for analysis to identify the germ and develop prevention or cure. If uncertain, samples are prepared on beef extract gelatin, then examined under a microscope to isolate the causative organism. The department operates six rooms in total, including four laboratories and two culture rooms.
