Water division tale near Milton in Walla Walla region

Read like a historic irrigation corridor account. The Walla Walla River splits near Milton forming Tumalum and Little Walla Walla streams then unites again at the Columbia. Judge McArthur fixed half of flow to each branch in 1872. Disputes over mill race diversions prompted claims and the Milton Freewater Hudson Hay Ditch Co sought 6000 inches of water for a large irrigation project. An ancient channel rebalanced water flow, aiding equal division. The Little Walla Walla irrigation district forms to govern water use and plans winter flooding as a new scheme.
