Jefferson City Jan 17 witnesses say A F Hollenback offered aid if Niedringhaus backed by Cook and Powell county officials. House commits to probe patronage claims while a party line vote moves Niedringhaus and Cockrell in a joint ballot slated for tomorrow as rival reports clash over investigation.
A coal mine fire trapped miners 800 feet underground as rescuers faced asphyxiating gas and smoke. The blaze began Monday afternoon at Decatur Coal Company, eight hundred feet below the surface, with several named workers reported among the dead and a large rescue party cut off and struggling to reach air.
Oberlin College President King announced Andrew Carnegie will aid Citizens National Bank failure victims. Beneficiaries include students and local residents with limited means. a commission will distribute funds though exact totals are not yet known. Students had about 16000 dollars in the bank.

Gone to the Jury New Ulm Minn January 17 The Koch murder case went to the jury. The defense notes editor Brooks says Koch is not the murderer and the state failed to impeach Brooks testimony.
The O R and N begins ice storage with the first shipment of 160 tons of North Powder ice. Ice about 14 inches thick slows completion. over 100 men are at work now with over 200 later. The railroad has built ponds and preparations across Eastern Oregon for loading ice directly onto freight cars.
An avalanche of rocks in Loveland Lake area north of Bergen on Sunday last killed 59 people and injured many. Only four bodies have been recovered as a mass of rock swept across the lake sweeping away homes people and cattle.

He attacked officials from federal judges to Governor Peabody, urged a congressional lobby, alleged misused funds, and signaled potential disruption for the Western branch. The convention planned measures to set up cooperative stores in all districts before adjournment.
Boston Jan 17 The defense for Charles Tucker in the Mabel Page murder case began with a vigorous challenge to the circumstantial case. Attorney Thomas Fr Vahey argued Tucker did not commit the crime, claiming he owned the knife involved, that he broke it under suspicion, and that the weapon could not have caused Page’s wounds.
The 1904 Crook County tax levy drops about 1.9 mills from 1903 as state and county taxes fall by 1.25 mills per 1000. Total reduction reaches 8.5 mills, offset slightly by small increases in road, school, and high school levies on the latest roll.
