Two men boarded the Oregon Express near Red Bluff and bound three mail clerks Charles Ryan Robert Warner and Rhein. They rifled six bags of registered mail believed to contain several thousand dollars destined for Northwestern points including Montana. The robbers disappeared toward a curve as a single officer pursued while railroad and post office inspectors head from San Francisco to assist.
Arthur Colby, assistant secretary and director since 1908, testified he knew only the financial side of National Packing Company operations. He named thirteen subsidiaries and identified the company minute book before being excused as the trial resumed in Chicago.

In Washington DC on a January afternoon Admiral Robley D. Evans died Wednesday. President Taft, Admiral George Dewey, General Nelson Miles and many officials attended the funeral at All Souls Unitarian Church. Interment followed at Arlington with one thousand military escorts and cadet units. Mrs Evans mourns at home. The service was led by Rev Ulysses and Rev Wellborn. A thirteen gun salute marked the grave’s end.
New York January 5 Colonel Roosevelt emerged at his office after days of silence declaring he had nothing to say on any subject. He also said he had read Lawrence Abbott's Outlook interview stating Roosevelt was not a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination.
