Exporters offer an advance of half a cent as Best Wheat prices hold at eighty four cents. Potato growers sell holdings while eps remain weak and livestock decreases noted. Dry farming issues cited. Cereal prices including barley oats stay in line with prior readings.
Exporters offered a 1 2 cent advance for blue stem and club wheat. Portland cash quotes show club and bluestem near steady with interior buying limited after holidays. Liverpool weakness offset gains at Chicago. Argentina and Australia supported prices while overall demand remained tepid. Prices compared to last year show club near 1.11 and blue stem about 1.06, flour patents at 6.365 versus 5.15 today.
Chicago January 4 Wheat closes weak as spirits slump and trading ebbs. September option remains only slight strength, opening modestly higher yet finishing with a small loss amid bearish pressure.
Potato growers in Oregon show wavering views as markets weaken. Newberg area farmers vote to accept $1 per cwt f o b for top stock rather than wait for higher prices. Best Oregons quoted in San Francisco at $1.60 to $1.00 per cental, about $1.25 to $1.35 here after commissions. Rural points face additional handling costs per sack and freight to the city.
The local egg market demonstrated additional softness today with many dealers offering at 16 160 a dozen as receipts continued to come in.
Market notes show chicken sales along the street from 180 to 10 cents for mixed and hens with turkeys in low demand. In Omaha weak cattle trade, receipts 6200 with steers around 6 to 6.60, cows and heifers about 4.75 to 5.15. Hog receipts 4600 with prices down 1 to 10 cents. yearlings 4.75 to 6.15. Shoop receipts 600. sheep and lambs mixed with muttons weak.
Chicago cattle and hog prices rise as large receipts push bids higher. Hogs total 23,000 with mixed sales between 7.80 and 8.20 per hundredweight, heavy and good lots noted. Cattle and Bhoop-strong. year-ago receipts cited, with reference to weekly totals and market activity.
IT D Bodine of the Sharkey Commission stockyards reports a decline in cattlemen entering the trade in Idaho and the Pacific Northwest. He cites dry farming and land being subdivided for farms as factors reducing livestock holdings and reshaping the industry.
