The Ballinger Pinchot controversy centers on Ballinger’s restoration of lands withdrawn earlier by Garfield and the ensuing Alaska Cunningham coal claim case. Glavis accused officials of delaying hearings while Ballinger faced pressure from Pinchot and Roosevelt era critics. The episode led to a presidential exoneration and renewed calls for congressional probes.
L R Glavis accuses Ballinger of pressuring patenting Cunningham claims without proper inquiry while Ballinger urged Congress to curb fraudulent Alaska entries. After Ballinger left, he joined Cunningham as attorney and later as secretary of the interior his office backed a decision validating fraudulent Alaska claims. Wickersham’s later reversal stopped mass patenting.
