Franklin Washington February 18 two Pacific Coast Company miners Andrew Charnock and Mike Vebeanick entombed by a cave in at the canyon mine No 11 chute. Rescue gangs toiled all night sinking a shaft as officials declared both men dead amid tons of sand and boulders. Forty other miners barely escaped when water rushed in.
In Walla Walla Feb 18 Bulgin’s revival closes with 600 to 700 conversions over four weeks. Over 30 join the altar last night as the evangelist preaches Cities of Refuge. Ministers report strong citywide awakening and a Big 300 rise in WCTU membership. George Rose and wife plan a tabernacle concert ending the revival.
Maximo Castillo the Mexican bandit linked to the Cumbre tunnel disaster was captured 38 miles south of Hatchita New Mexico by American troops. He and six followers surrendered without a fight and will be brought to Fort Bliss to avoid the mountains on the Mexican side. Captain White, Ninth cavalry, reported the capture to General Scott after information from Walter McCormick Las Palomas ranch manager.
At a Pendleton Commercial Association meeting, directors adopted two resolutions. One urges the government to conduct a hydrographic survey of the Umatilla River and tributaries. The other endorses the Paradise irrigation project, contingent on full water supply study and no interference with existing or under-construction projects.

A woman’s political club in Halfway formed to back Dr C J Smith for the Democratic nomination for governor. Led by Mrs N D Brown and Miss Ella Moulton, the Smith Suffrage Club has plans to campaign in the Panhandle Baker County area. An invitation will be sent to Dr Smith to visit Halfway and speak.
The Colorado Supreme Court refused to take original jurisdiction in Mother Jones' habeas corpus case from state military authorities at Trinidad. The ruling sends any further action to the lower court. In Trinidad Cole the congressional investigating committee toured coal camps with mine owners and miners representatives and militia escorts, delaying a decision on Governor Ammon's request to take Jones' testimony at the hospital or delay until the committee's return to Denver.
Percy W. Rochester, manager of the Association of Western Portland Cement Manufacturer, killed himself by inhaling poison in his Northwestern Bank building office in Portland. The body was found by his daughter. no reason was given for the act.
American troops capture a Mexican bandit responsible for burning Cum bre tunnel. The lead story notes his capture and the dilemma of his disposition under U S authority, framed amid other local items in brief form.
An earthquake shock was felt at 10 17 this morning lasting 30 seconds with vibrations north to south. It appeared strongest in Reno but was felt in Virginia Carson and Verdi. A few walls cracked and some windows broke.

Col W H Miller editor lecturer and humorist will open the Pendleton chautauqua in July with a pioneer day. His subject Farming and Being Farmed. The Ellison White Chautauqua association sent the notice. Local speakers requested for pioneer day and music will be by the Lyric Glee club. Free tickets announced for every county pioneer resident.
Former Senator Bourne filed with the secretary of state a form for a statewide initiative measure banning circulators from running petitions. The proposal carries a penalty of 100 to 1000 dollars or imprisonment for violations.
In Chicago on February 18 Miss Aileen Heppner the nurse at the center of the fake alienation suit against Clarence O Funk faces trial for perjury and conspiracy. The case ties to an alleged plot involving Attorney General Donahoe and detective Isaac Stiefel linked to the Henning alienation suit. Donahoe was convicted and fined. Stiefel was acquitted, with questions remaining on who funded the scheme.
B F Jones of Roseburg filed his declaration of candidacy for the Republican nomination for congressman from Oregon's first district. The action was announced in Salem on February 18.
Berlin reports court circles buzzing over a Royal Palace incident involving Grand Duchess Victoria Louise, wife of the Duke of Brunswick. A sentry on guard allegedly winked at a plainly dressed woman who approached the entrance. when the Duchess entered, Duke Ernst sternly reprimanded the private, warning of possible jail if the woman had not been royalty.
English comedian Marie Lloyd and her manager Bernard Dillon plan marriage in Portland Oregon amid immigration row. Lloyd posted a $4000 bond to secure Dillon's entry from Vancouver and must wed by noon tomorrow or Dillon faces deportation per Commissioner General Caminett order.
Merchants allowed flag sales in stores and the public supported a Child Welfare Day event. One thousand flags donated by the Oregon Congress of Mothers were sold by parent teachers associations, raising about 1020 dollars to fund statewide child welfare work. A list names participating schools and assisting women spanning Hawthorne Lincoln Washington and local committees.
Nate Cecil, described as a degenerate, was jailed for twenty days on a disorderly conduct charge. police say he later attacked a blind girl at her home, forcing entry after a knock at the door. A second woman aided the victim and identified Cecil by voice and face in clashes prior to the arrest. The case may prompt a statutory charge in the state court.
