110 Mardi Gras excursionists aboard the Queen City from Pittsburg to New Orleans were alarmed as the river steamboat struck a pier and sprang a hole in its side. Passengers, mostly asleep, were rescued with lifebelts aiding crews and local lifeboat assistance getting all aboard boats or onto the pier.
A. E. Lambert, formerly with American National Bank, is cashier of Powder Valley State Bank of North Powder which failed to open due to reserves below legal limit. Lambert says the bank is not insolvent and will reopen after readjustment. State Superintendent Lar cent departed Salem to take charge. Deposit total exceeded 56,000 with loans over 58,000. bank capital 20,000. Presidents and officers named include H. Gorman, F. Vandecar, A. B. Lambert, and J. L. Kilkingon. Large withdrawals began after a July Metzler-Hemstead Lumber Co. default and intensified recently.
Washington February 17 Commissioner General of Immigration Caminetti said he is running for California governor on the Democratic ticket. He plans a formal announcement on March 1 and denies discord with the administration over his exclusion speech. Democratic leaders say the episode embarrassed the administration, though Caminetti insists otherwise.
Springfield Mo Feb 17 six were injured five seriously when east and west Frisco passenger trains collided at Nichols Junction. The west bound train sideswiped the other, hurling three coaches into a ditch.
Hearings opened before the house land committee on Secretary Lane's bill authorizing leasing of Alaska coal lands. Indications show congressional sentiment favoring leasing to develop resources. The proposal sets an acreage charge from 25 cents to 1.25 dollars per acre plus 2 cents per ton of coal mined.
Bridgeport Conn Feb 17 State's Attorney Judson upheld the indictment against former New York New Haven Hartford president Charles W Mellen after quashing charges against five railroad officials over the Westport wreck of October 3 1912 which killed seven people Homer B S Cummings said three of the four counts against Mellen were nulled and the remaining count cites no detailed cause of alleged negligence he plans to press for an immediate trial
New York Feb 17 Opinion is divided on President Wilsons stance toward the Burnett immigration bill The measure has passed the House and may proceed to the Senate where S Hoke Smith predicts the president will sign if it wins a large majority He notes the country sentiment favors the literacy test and suggests a veto if the bill fails to clear the Senate test.
Thomas Jordan a well known city youth seeks a US pension of 20 dollars a month under a Senate bill introduced by Senator George Chamberlain on Feb 12. A veteran of Co. 1 Oregon Volunteer Infantry from the Spanish American War, he contracted fever and rheumatism in the islands and has been unable to work for six months.
About 150 members of Grants Pass Ladies' Auxiliary of the Commercial Club held a banquet at a local hotel on February 17. Mrs. Arthur Conklin served as toastmistress. Mayor McKinstry, HL. Giikey, Mrs. FE. Harris, Mrs. Woodard, and Mrs. Jane McKibbon who heads the national food sanitation committee replied to toasts. A literary program followed.
A House sub committee appointed to investigate United States Judge Emory Speer of Georgia consists of Representatives John Floyd Edwin Y Webb and A J Volstead. Judge Speer was ill at appointment but pledged to attend hearings if carried. The inquiry covers the Huff property of Macon and alleged dissipation due to court delays.
In San Francisco the city church federation voted 74 to 19 percent against accepting the resignation of Rev Charles F Aked as president of the federation. Aked, pastor of the First Congregational Church, had been criticized for remarks about the virgin birth. He had announced plans to resign the presidency several days earlier.
Washington funeral in the senate honors the late Senator Bacon with an Episcopal service led by Bishop Harding and a benediction by Senatorial chaplain Rev. Prettyman. The ceremony was simple, without music or flowers.

Hillsborg Oregon February 17 Nearly all county sawmills will start the season within 30 days due to rising foreign and local demand. County mills cut over 200 million feet annually. The Commercial Club plans to locate a large mill near the city on the Tillamook line.

Mrs Selma Helppla testified before a congressional labor probe that on December 11 women picketing for strikers were driven off the Houghton county road by deputies and fired upon. She said some were hit with sticks as they fled, with six women knocked down. Other strikers' wives attended the hearing.
Fire at Bowery lodging house kills two and injuries many as flames trap tenants on upper floors. An explosion collapses a roof section while firemen rescue a man with a baby in his arms. A body is found amid the ruins, with a man said to have died saving the child.
In Hernando Mississippi February 17 masked men halted an Illinois Central passenger train near Love Station and forced Sheriff E Nichols to surrender two Black men Johnson McGuirk and William Phillips accused of wounding mill owner J K Ingram. The mob took McGuirk to a trestle where he was made to leap to his death. Phillips was spared after Nichols interceded and the crowd dispersed.
The defense and the prosecution in the Gore trial rested at 9:50 am. The judge instructed the jury that the burden of proof rests on the plaintiff and that conspiracy to secure political ferment might be shown by direct or circumstantial evidence. He told the jury to verdict for the plaintiff if Gore touched her without consent or belief she would resist.
Seattle foresees a high turnout despite a light drizzle as 47 candidates compete in the primary, including nine for the mayoralty. Hiram C. Gill, recalled from 1911, is expected to be nominated, with two rivals vying for the post. The final election is set for March 3.

The death may relate to two missing persons from December, Ed Sapie and John A. Spaulding, a Seattle lumberman, who left Grants Pass to check timber holdings.

Jim Dupuis, longtime Cottonwood pawnshop owner and alleged bootlegger, has been arrested on a federal indictment returned by a Portland grand jury. Held on a $2000 bond, he faces charges believed to stem from perjury during the Columbia George murder trial after testifying for the defense. Worldly as a ringleader of bootleggers, Dupuis is described as a shrewd operator with ties to local liquor dealings.
Salem reports the supreme court ruled Portland police and firemen are officers not laborers, so the state eight hour law does not apply. Mayor Ashee, jailed on a State Labor Commissioner complaint, was ordered freed. Narwu County Republican notes Towpvsend found dead near his home, elderly and in poor health, believed to have collapsed fighting the Wizard.
King Albert of Belgium was thrown from his horse in Brussels on February 17 and sustained a broken left arm. The accident prompted medical attention and a royal health update.
