A Belgian relief drive in New York declares twenty five million dollars in food and clothing at European depots, enough to prevent starvation for six months. Officials will offer Spain a chance to continue distribution as American relief shifts to funding efforts.
A large block of wheat land south of Yoakum and twelve miles west of Pendleton was sold by W. Colling Pendleton from J. Smith Livestock Co. The 4000 acres valued at 20 to 28 dollars per acre is to be paid in cash and will expand holdings of the Smith company in the area. The land has produced weed crops and half the tract is set for improvement.
Petition drives for Ordinance No. 610 granting Standard Oil a 50 year plant franchise in the city are circulating. About 200 names sought from local residents. organizers include Frank Whewtone and others. opponents have signed as well.
Pendleton camp W O W reports a net gain of 81 members in two months and presents a silk flag donated by the head camp. J F Hoyt, district manager, accepts the flag amid remarks by Gerald and Jide Thorns Bite. The group aims to exceed 500 members by April 1 as local members continue the drive.
The Lincoln Day banquet at Hotel Pendleton drew sixty plus citizens, the second so far, with speeches praising Lincoln’s life and legacy. Toasts honored Lincoln’s humility, patriotism, and influence, while a final program featured patriotic songs and the Star Spangled Banner.
London February 15 Three Americans are among the fifteen Saxonian survivors landed today. The Saxonian was submarined on February eighth. One American is injured and the English boatswain died. Lifeboats drifted for sixty eight hours.
H G Hurlburt of Echo dies after long illness at Mesdowe age seventy. He owned land where Hermiston now stands and founded the Maxwell project. Survived by three children Thomas Hurlburt Mrs Soon and Mrs Rows Newbert. Funeral planned in Hermiston tomorrow.
Cunard liners Laconia and Ascania arrive unexpectedly in New York Harbor in February. Both ships were armed and carried passengers and mail. The Laconia’s sister ship Franconia was torpedoed a year ago.
In wartime the leading U S and German combat chiefs would direct the movement of troops and fleets. The text notes Josephs Dantels as a figure of authority among these military leaders.
Buenos Aires dispatch says a Brazilian Janeiro report claims the German raider Vineta was sunk by British cruisers off the Brazilian coast. Survivors were captured and towed to safety as British ships pressed the pursuit of the German vessel.
Bernstorff departs Washington for New York on a special train after farewell meetings with friends. He burns a batch of letters before departure and will undergo a church inspection upon reaching Halifax. a State Department guard accompanies him.
Three great foreign liners from French White Star Cinpard lines set sail from New York harbor despite German submarine danger. The fo chambeag Adria tic and Carmaenta carried passengers as tensions rose in the sea lanes.
London February 13 report states the White Star liner Afric, a 12000 ton steel vessel, was submarined in unrestricted warfare. Seventeen sailors are missing.
On February 13 grain prices fell across the board as submarining disrupted five elevators and embargoes spread eastward. May wheat slid to about 1.74 dollars, July to 1.59 dollars, September to 1.47 dollars with closures rumored for additional elevators. Dealers warn of market collapse absent relief, while rail lines embargo grain shipments east. Portland notes club prices and biscuit items in brief, with unsettled trading continues.
In Port Washington on February 13 Senator Edinbury introduced a resolution to permit allied warships to use American harbors to curb violations of U S sea rights without war. President Wilson reportedly approved the plan, allowing entry to capture destroy or resist belligerent ships practicing illegal sea warfare. The measure was sent to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Plane opposing.
Berne Peb 13 The severance of relations astonished Berlin and German Americans in the United States. Officials warned President Wilson would not act, fearing internal trouble. Hollweg downcast as Gerard departed. Zimmerman praised the U.S. departure while murmuring war. Germans expect decisive action before U.S. entry. Submarine warfare and censorship intensify. Newsrooms urge caution and urge protecting passenger ships. Desperate internal unrest and political pressure grow.
East Oregonian reports Salem officials unveil a state highway bonding plan to fund half a million dollars annually for new roads. The plan includes expanding routes from Multnomah through Astoria and extending rockwork and road systems across eastern Oregon, with several long-distance projects coordinated to improve major corridors. The measure also marginally shifts industrial and wage oversight while consolidating certain labor and welfare duties under state committees.
A large auto show junket departs Pendleton with about 50 vehicles and drivers bound for WallAWallA and nearby towns. Pickup is 1 30 a m at the Garden City era and the fleet will march from Main and Alm. Allen of the Alien Word company handles arrangements. Two singers accompany the party for entertainment.
