TOKIO Feb 13 Bloody fighting broke out as police tried to disperse thousands protesting taxation. Five hundred officers faced rioters with sabers clubs and stones. two hundred arrested and many injured. Shops were smashed and several newspapers silenced amid nationwide unrest.
H M Cockburn of Milton announces he will run again for county commissioner after brief withdrawal. He cites urgent friend solicitation and says he changed his mind about leaving public life. He’ll campaign on his record and admits mistakes but asserts total county service.
George Hoberta, half brother of ex Congressm W R Ellis and a local farmer, is being boomed as a Republican candidate for county judge though he has not announced. Douglas Belts, retired sheepman and owner of the Schmidt building, is also considering a bid. Judge Maloney will not run for re election.
In Portland on February 13 William Hanley resigned as president after Mayor Albee’s welcome address. He said a political bee is buzzing in his bonnet and he will not head any organization while it remains. Secretary Hinkle reported the group has grown to 60 irrigation projects, each allotted five delegates.

District Game Warden RE Averill received 24 pairs of California quail from State Warden Finley for two refuges near Hermiston and at the state hospital grounds. The birds, distinct from Oregon quail, are hardy and expected to multiply quickly, with a later shipment of 48 Hungarian pheasants planned. Max Muller ships the pheasants, released in Willamette valley with favorable results.
Horace Hawkins, attorney for the miners' union, filed a supreme court petition seeking Mother Jones' release via habeas corpus in Denver. The petition alleges Adjutant General Chase violated the constitution and bill of rights in her arrest, arguing the ruling mirrored the Moyer case from a decade ago.
Hancock Feb 13 Michigan copper miners’ legal adviser Judge Hilton told a congressional committee the men welcome an inquiry into their union affairs and officers. He urged probes into owners’ finances and the Citizens’ Alliance. The committee will consider the request and seek copies of the federal industrial commission report for the record.

San Francisco February 12 Dr Charles F Aked of the First Congregational church has resigned the presidency of the San Francisco Church Federation. He will not attend the executive committee meeting at the California Street Methodist Episcopal church and has announced his intention to Secretary Hatch. He will attend the federation general meeting Monday night to explain his reasons and deliver an address on union strength.
London Feb 13 The freight steamer My Own sank in the English Channel off Shoheham. It is believed the eight crew members were drowned. The captain was found clinging to the rigging by rescuers.
Paris February 13. John J. Hartjes, the head of the Paris firm Morgan and Company, is reported seriously ill at Grasse.
