In Portland on February 10 John M. Gearin opened the defense in the Hermann trial delivering the first half of the argument. He asserted Hermann’s innocence and that government evidence pointed to his guilt. Colonel Worthington was set to finish the defense’s opening later that afternoon.
In Vancouver on Feb 19 three workers, Lee Weaver J Dempster and AH Smith, were repairing a dead wire when a live line broke causing a volcanic arc over thirty thousand volts. Weaver was killed instantly while Dempster and Smith suffered severe burns and were hospitalized. The trio attempted to reach the door but touched charged corrugated iron on the tower and were unconscious until pulled to safety.

Kennewick Wash Feb 10 The sage brush study shows commercial value for road building. Northern Pacific Irrigation experimented with sage dusted pulp mats mixed with earth to form firm dustless road surfaces. Trial results suggest miles of sage brush oxfords could be laid this spring in windy areas.
A Weston zone meeting unanimously approved an initiative campaign to maintain the Eastern Oregon Normal School. A boosting committee was named and to be joined by additional members from across Oregon as the drive moves forward with an executive committee to draft the bill and oversee the campaign.
