Walla Walla Feb 10 Following a county board order clerks in county offices will be paid no more than 2.50 a day and no extra help without board sanction. Walter L Cadman Hugh Bentley and Le C Goodwin quit their posts at noon declaring they would not work under the new wage rate. Assessor Berryman’s two clerks had been paid 2 a day. The Assessor left short of help. Also notes on Philadelphia steamer damage and grand jury activity in Cleveland and Albany stories follow in brief.
A war department cable from General Corbin in Manila reports fighting between Philippine Mounte and Pulajanse of San Jose, Samar. Second Lieutenant Ghetin was wounded, one scout killed and five privates wounded. About one thousand Pulajangen near Mt. Tamo. American troops with scouts sent to dislodge them. an additional battalion of infantry has been sent to the island.
In Kanab February 10 John OBrian, Standard Oil rep, says no more purchases in Kansas without a definite policy. Chanute notes the company’s stance risks fueling a producer boycott. oil output could drop as producers abandon activity and storage tanks near capacity.

In Berlin on February 11, striking miners refused yesterday's Raschen conference decision and did not return to work. Extremists attacked strike leaders Rachsen and Hue, who urged ending the work stoppage, and Hue was injured. Miners damaged part of the railway near Basen as authorities prepare to restore order.
Vigorous protest among teachers after Superintendent Welles announced House Bill No 41. The measure would favor normal graduates over non graduates, risking employment for experienced non graduates. Portland Feb 10 ex governor Geer and J E Bridges ex receiver of Roseburg land office testified before the federal grand jury and were said to have turned state s evidence Indictments expected to be made public this afternoon plus unrelated items from Iowa and Washington including a fire destroying four business houses and a savings bank in Onkaloore and a social toast by John Sharp Williams to President Roosevelt in Washington with caustic remarks about Roosevelt as author and political figure
A month more will be needed to rewire about 750 local telephone sub stations. K B Kennedy and 11 workers oversee the project, with new phones to follow in three weeks. The overhaul aims to place Portland’s telephone system among the Northwest’s best. Capital stock for Pacific Statler Telephone & Telegraph grows to 25 million dollars.
Clark Wood, who recently sold the Weston Leader, has repurchased the plant and declares he will run the paper as long as he lives. He had considered retirement to a Franklin County wheat farm but reconsidered and remains permanently in Weston, with Colonel Fred Boyd of the Athena Prem noted.
