Washington December 30 Pennsylvania as a coal producer set a record with an estimated 267000000 short tons of anthracite and bituminous coal combined, according to advance statistics released by the geological survey. The strong year comes as Pennsylvania breaks all prior production marks.
Reports from Presidio and Mexico describe Mexican rebels pressing the Ojinaga garrison as it resists an attack that began the previous evening. The garrison, about 1,000, suffered heavy losses while defenders reportedly urged surrender amid threats. General Scott's dispatch notes ongoing engagement along three sides of Ojinaga with reinforcements arriving.

Mrs Leona Thompson a pioneer Pendleton resident died in Portland at 11 this morning after a two day illness. Cause given as acid poisoning. She was born September 4 1855 in Eugene and moved to Pendleton with her father in 1866. Survived by three daughters two sisters and four brothers and several aunts. Funeral planned in Pendleton with Rev Charles Quinney officiating.
In Salem Oregon Governor West will dispatch his private secretary Miss Fern Hobbs to Copperfield to enforce laws and seek resignations of saloon keeper officials. Hobbs will likely depart tomorrow with authority to close the saloons if needed.
Marshall M Myers, a longtime Cabbage Hill rancher, was sentenced to 25 days in county jail for contempt of court after he refused to vacate the homestead. The land dispute stemmed from contested entry by E L Smith and subsequent government actions, with Myers publicly defying the order to leave as he faced further court action.

Brisbane reports say passengers of the Dutch steamship Tasmen were taken off the stranded vessel after it struck a rock at Torres Strait's entrance. The ship was refloated and passengers will be landed at Thursday Island, then transported to Batavia by another vessel.
