Train wreck halts after break derails fast mail near Baker
In Baker Oregon on December 29 a broken rail hurled the O W R N fast mail into a ditch between Haines and Baker at 7 30 am. The train ran 290 full rail lengths before stopping. Every car remained on the track except the diner which tipped onto its side. No one was killed or injured. Engineer Mingineer Lou Ferguson stayed at the throttle and coaxed the engine back to a stop as the track tore up for hundreds of feet. The accident occurred just after passing Haines while descending toward Baker 2 1/2 miles away.

Moyer Undergoes Successful Operation at St Luke project

Two Men Killed in Indian Creek Coal Mine Explosion
In Bickness Indiana on December 19 a gas explosion in the Indian Creek coal mine killed Emery Williams and Robert Cotton. Two other workers escaped or narrowly survived as the night shift of about 150 men had just left the mine when the blast occurred. An unidentified body was reported but not recovered.

Deported Insane Chinamen Sent Home From Oregon
In Salem Oregon twenty two inmates from the State Insane asylum were shipped to their native land. They will leave Seattle tomorrow aboard the Steamship Minnesota under heavy guard. Officials say deportation is cheaper than ten years of confinement. An anti-slavery bill from the Philippine National Assembly was ratified by the Philippine commission and is now law.

Girls flee murder suspect as Pittsburg search continues
In West Homestead area authorities hunt Marie and Estelle Yakobik aged 15 and 17 who fled from Henry Rokowski 22 after he beat the girls' mother and a neighbor and killed a constable. Rokowski barricaded in a shack near West Homestead repulsed deputies. a posse formed to storm the place.
